On this day in Hip Hop history, Houston trio Geto Boys released their third LP We Can’t Be Stopped. Coming in the wake of what almost was a fatal accident for one of the group’s members, this project is hailed as one of most authentic and true albums to come out during an era when the gangsta rap bandwagon was full of wannabes and N.W.A. clones. The smooth melancholic production coupled and detailed  thought-provoking lyrics come together to create one of the Dirty South’s earliest classics.

Although this album is packed with brow-raising content, it was the album’s cover that grabbed the public’s attention. The picture used is a candid from Bushwick Bill’s trip to the ER after being shot in the eye by his girlfriend whom he was attempting to wrestle a gun from. Since the album’s release, Bill has expressed regret for letting the cover be published, saying:

“It still hurts me to look at that cover because that was a personal thing I went through…I still feel the pain from the fact I’ve got a bullet in my brain…I think it was pretty wrong to do it even though I went along with the program at first.”

Aside from any controversy, We Can’t Be Stopped is one of Geto Boyz most popular projects and features what some would say is the second most popular single the trio has ever released “My Mind Playing Tricks On Me” which peaked at #1 on  the Billboard Top Rap singles chart and #23 on the Billboard Hot 100.
