According to Dr. Kevin Cowtan of the University of York in the United Kingdom, and PhD student Robert Way of the University of Ottawa, this past May [2016] made it the ninth consecutive month for the hottest 12-month period.

Basing the information off of accumulated research on global temperature, various different blocks of time were monitored (not just January-December) to pick up on temperature patterns.
