Baltimore police appeared at the 23-year-old’s apartment to serve an arrest warrant for Gaines and another man who lived in her home as well. Gaines was wanted for charges that included disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and multiple traffic violations stemming from March 2016.

When the police arrived at Gaines’ home, the officers repeatedly knocked on the suspect’s door announcing their presence and their intent to serve an arrest warrant. Police Chief James Johnson says no one answered the door, but they could hear the cries of a child and a man and woman’s voice inside the home.

According to NBC News, once officials entered the apartment with a key from the landlord, Gaines was on the floor pointing a gun at the officials as the man attempted to escape with the one year old child in his hands. Gaines and the five year old boy were left inside the house as a stand-off ensued between Gaines and the cops.

According to Police Spokeswoman Elise Armacost, at around 3 p.m. “Gaines directly pointed a gun at a tactical officer and said: ‘If you don’t leave, I’m going to kill you.'” The officer then fired his weapon, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that killed Korryn Gaines and shot her five year old son.

It remains unclear if the boy’s injuries resulted from Gaines or the police. He was transported to a hospital with non life threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
