Willem Dafoe of Spider-Man fame has just joined the cast of Netflix’s upcoming live action version of the popular Japanese manga and anime Death Note. According to Mashable, Dafoe will voice the apple loving Shinigami (Death God), Ryuk.

Created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student, Light Yagami, who finds a mysterious notebook equipped with the power to kill anyone whose name is written inside its pages. Motivated by boredom, Ryuk drops the notebook into the Human World in hopes of stirring up some excitement. The outcome of this decision starts a brilliant cat and mouse chase between Light and the authorities; specifically their genius detective, L.

Nat Wolff (Paper Towns) will star as Light alongside Straight Outta Compton‘s Keith Stanfield as L. Paul Nakauchi, Margaret Qualley and Shea Whigham rounds out the rest of the upcoming cast. Adam Wingard is set to direct with Jeremy Slater working the script.
