On August 4, Variety announced a Divergent television series is in the works. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer and TV Group Chair Kevin Beggs said the studio will produce a TV movie that would lead into a first season of 10 to 13 episodes. If they do well, the series could expand to multiple seasons. “There’s a tremendous fandom,” Beggs said.
Because The Divergent Series: Allegiant, underperformed at the box office this spring, the studio decided it’s not worth the resources to shoot a theatrical version. It made $66 million in domestic grosses and $113 million internationally.
The Divergent Series is a based on the Divergent novels by author Veronica Roth. In the story, citizens are divided into different factions based on their social and personality affiliations. It’s unclear whether Shailene Woodley or Miles Teller will be returning. They both were caught off guard by the news. Divergent was poised to be as big as The Hunger Games, but fell short. Given that we are in a golden age of television, it is an interesting move by the studio to turn Divergent into a show.
