After the departures of Jay Pharoah, Taran Killam and Jon Rudnitsky, Saturday Night Live has a couple of other changes going into the next season. NBC has confirmed writers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider have been promoted to co-head writers for season 42.
This promotion is an intelligent and necessary move for SNL considering Schneider and Kelly are responsible for some of the show’s most beloved sketches since they joined the show in 2011 like “The Beygency,” “Back Home Ballers,” the Emmy-nominated“(Do It On My) Twin Bed,” “Bern Your Enthusiasm,” and “Bar Talk” with Hillary Clinton.
In addition, Kelly’s critically acclaimed directorial debut Other People (starringSNL alum Molly Shannon) is set to debut in theaters next month. Judging by their consistent string of hit sketches over the years, it’s safe to say Schneider and Kelly will be able to guide the show’s writers into higher ratings.
SNL has suffered for years with a declining reputation for actually being funny. Perhaps that’s about to change.
