Team USA swimmers are safe and sound after being robbed at gunpoint. The United States Olympic Committee told NBC about the incident occurring this morning [Sunday, August 14] in Rio, Brazil.
Ryan Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, and Jimmy Feigen had just won their gold medals at this year’s Summer Olympics, and were en route back to the Olympic Village by taxi, after spending time at France House. The suspects, who pretended to be police officers, stopped the car and ordered them to get out, then get down on the ground. Lochte said to NBC’s Billy Bush that he resisted the apparent arrest, unlike his fellow teammates. As a result, a male suspect pointed a gun at Loche’s head and stole only his wallet. They went after the rest of the athlete’s money, as well. Authorities are aware of the armed robbery and questioning the swimmers for further details.
