Two Detroit doctors have now been charged with planning female genital mutilation, also known as FGM. Dr. Fakhruddin Attar and wife Farida were arrested last Friday [April 21st] according to the Department of Justice.
They are alleged to have worked with Jumana Nagarwala, another female physician charged with same crime. This act is recognized internationally affecting around 200 million girls. The World Health Organization (WHO) consider it as a human rights violation.
Victims as a young as six have allegedly received the procedure in the United States. According to a complaint, two young girls were taken to Attar’s clinic recently from Minnesota and accompanied by two adult women.
