The Bronx, New York is widely known as the birthplace of the Hip-Hop genre, home to trailblazer DJ Kool Herc. Now, we don’t just have to say it, as it will be visible to any and everyone who passes by Hip Hop Boulevard, formerly known as 1520 Sedgwick Avenue. This exciting unveiling, that took place today, June 8th, will be coupled with the first ever Global Hip Hop Day sponsored by the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, the office of The Bronx Borough President, the office of Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson, and HOT 97.

The day is dedicated to recognize Hip Hop’s part in fostering positivity and unity within the community. Global Hip Hop Day will begin with a Proclamation ceremony where the street will be renamed, followed up with a Block Party at Cedar Playground. Hip Hop has of course expanded since its humble beginnings, becoming a voice for the people and platform to freely express one’s self.

You can expect live sets from Hot 97s DJs, namely Funk Flex, DJ Camilo, and DJ Enuff, food trucks and vendors, dance competitions and free giveaways. There may even be an opportunity to score tickets to Summer Jam. Expect to see many of Hip Hop’s past greats and even some current superstars in attendance paying homage to the place responsible for their ability to put music out today. This is an awesome opportunity to educate one’s self on Hip-Hop’s origins directly from the source.
