Australian group Remi have scored a BET Awards nomination for Best New International Act, catapulting the group further onto the world stage and capping off an impressive and rapid rise over the last couple of years. Remi are the third Australians to be nominated for a BET Award after Iggy Azalea in 2015 and Tkay Maidza in 2016.
Remi are nominated against seven other international acts this year in the viewer-voted category that will be announced on Tuesday, June 27 in LA. As the sole representative from the Pacific region, Remi’s competition is Dave (United Kingdom), Jorja Smith (United Kingdom), RayVanny (Tanzania), Amanda Black (South Africa), Changmo (South Korea), Daniel Caesar (Canada) and Skip Marley (Jamaica, grandson of Bob Marley).
Emcee Remi began collaborating with group members Sensible J and Dutch in 2011 under the Melbourne Hip-Hop/Soul collective Run for Your Life and within months the group had won the prestigious Australian Hilltop Hoods’ Initiative Grant. Following this the group now called Remi released a series of albums, the first being Regular People S#%t in 2012, Raw X Infinity in mid-2014 on their own new label imprint House Of Beige (charting in Australia) before Remi’s most recent album Divas And Demons being released late 2016. Remi has kept busy between albums releasing mixtapes and working with numerous Australian artists including Hau, Seth Sentry, L-Fresh The Lion, Spit Syndicate, Man Made Mountain, N’fa Jones of 1200 Techniques, 1/6 of Pang Productions and Sampa The Great.
Much of Remi’s music has politically and socially active tones to it, calling for marriage equality, legalisation of marijuana and improvements in race relations in Australia. Citing a wide array of influences from Radiohead, Common, D’angelo, Jeff Buckley, Ice Cube, Outkast, J Dilla to early Bloc Party, Remi are determined not to be pigeonholed strictly in any strict definition of what hip hop music is.
Remi have toured across Australia building a reputation as a must-see live act, performing headline, club and festival shows, opening for Joey Bada$$ and the Under Achievers, The Pharcyde, De La Soul, Xzibit, Vic Mensa, Oddisee, Nas, Arrested Development, Danny Brown amongst others. Remi have also performed in New Zealand, toured the UK and continental Europe on multiple occasions and are currently touring Australia with Sampa The Great.
