Carolina Panther’s quarterback Cam Newton issued a public apology regarding his remarks to female analyst Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer. During a news conference on Wednesday (October 4), Newton was asked about wide receiver Devin Funchess and the physicality of routes. “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes like…its funny,” he laughed. In light of his remarks, Yogurt brand Dannon ended their professional relationship with the athlete, no longer using him in their commercials and advertisements. A spokesman from the company mentioned being “shocked and disheartened” by his remarks.

Newton issued an apology via social media hours later. “After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women. And to be honest, that was not my intention. If you are a person who took offense to what I said, I sincerely apologize to you.” He goes on to say, “I am a man who tries to be a positive role model to my community and tries to use my platform to inspire others…”
