Get Out leads the pack of nominations at the 2017 Gotham Awards.
Jordan Peele’s groundbreaking horror flick scored a total of 4 nods for best feature, along with nominations for breakthrough director, best screenplay and best actor (Daniel Kaluuya). Get Out was produced with a $4 million budget and debuted passed the $100 million mark, making Peele the only African-American director to do so.
The film follows the story of a young African-American male who goes to meet his caucasian girlfriend’s family at their mysterious estate. As the weekend progresses he notices that there’s a strange correlation between his girlfriend’s family and missing Black people in the community.
The Gotham Awards is an annual ceremony curated by the Independent Filmmakers Project, that recognizes indie films. Other nominees include Mary J. Blige for her breakthrough role in Netflix’s Mudbound.
