For the first time ever, Disney Channel will depict the coming out journey of a young teenage boy in the series Andi Mack. The character Cyrus Goodman, played by Joshua Rush, will realize he is gay and comes out to his friends.

The show was created by the executive producer of Lizzie McGuire, Terri Minsky. Andi Mack follows the journey of several teens and how they learn to navigate through life. In the new season, Andi finds out that her older sister, Bex, is actually her mother. Like any teenager, she also is going through the motions of discovering her feelings for her longtime crush Jonah.

Here comes the plot twist: Cyrus, Andi’s best friend, realizes that he also has feelings for Jonah. The season premiere will show Cyrus expressing these feelings and confiding in his other best friend, Buffy, who is supportive of Cyrus’ new self-discovery. Throughout the season, Cyrus must figure out how to tell his girlfriend, Iris.

The Walt Disney Co. released a statement about storylines and characters and stated that “Disney remains committed to continuing to create characters that are accessible and relatable to all children.” The network pursued advice from child development experts and organizations like GLAAD and Common Sense Media. Disney believes that they’ve created a story that is age-appropriate and depicts the importance of kindness and inclusion.

The season two premiere of Andi Mack will air this Friday, October 27th at 8 p.m. EST.
