Mixed martial arts fans have been waiting with bated breath all year to see who UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor will face when he finally makes his return to the UFC’s hallowed Octagon.
McGregor has spent all of 2017 thus far inactive with regards to his mixed martial arts career, instead focusing on his professional boxing debut against veteran boxing legend Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
In the meantime, many UFC lightweights attempted to solidify their chances at facing the Irish champion upon his return, with athletes Tony Ferguson, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Kevin Lee all vying for the opportunity. In the end, Ferguson would be the one to claim the title of interim lightweight champion after submitting Lee via triangle choke in the third round of their main event bout at UFC 216.
But… Until the UFC confirms a fight is booked, nothing is certain. And if any money fights to make themselves available, they’ll most likely take precedence – something McGregor will continue to campaign for.
During a recent Q & A in Glasgow, McGregor said he would beat Mayweather second time round, and has demanded a rematch in MMA.
“What sickens me is that the little mother fucker is retired now,” McGregor said.
“If I had another go with him, under boxing rules, I’d get that win. He had to change his whole approach. With those lessons I learned, with another go around, I’d get it.
“He’s 50-0 and getting on, I’m not calling him out. I’ll sit back. We’ll see how he gets on with this round of money. Maybe I’ll get another call.
“Originally he was saying an MMA bout next. That’s what he said before the fight.
“He did say an MMA fight. So if he wants to, lets fucking do it. There’s not a hope in hell… I’d like to see him come over to our side and have a knock. I earned their respect and put myself out there. Style over to my side and earn our respect now.”
