Two legendary and respected hit makers, Mariah Carey and N.W.A., might soon be awarded for their respective marks on music history. Nominated for the 2018 Songwriters Hall of Fame, both acts may be set to receive well deserved distinctions.

N.W.A. could be the second rap act ever to make it to the Songwriters Hall, second to only Jay-Z aka Hova, who was inducted just this year. Mariah Carey’s iconic reign saw the most No.1s on the Billboard Hot 100 ever. She is listed as co-writer on 17 of 18 chart topping hits.

This year publisher and Jay associate Jon Platt spoke on hip hop’s inclusion in the Songwriters Hall. “When it comes to the industry’s biggest honors, the hip-hop community has a very long history of being told, ‘You’re not songwriters,’ ‘You’re not quite there yet,’ ‘It’s not your time yet,’” he said. “Well, to all the songwriters and artists from our community and our generation, JAY would want you to know that this induction is a signal that your time has come and your time is now.”

Six of the 26 individuals nominated for the esteemed honor will go home as inductees at next year’s gala in New York on June 14. Voting takes place through December 17.
