Detroit Lions’ Marvin Jones, Jr. is out to prove, he has skills on and off the field. Over the summer, Jones auditioned for American Idol and to the shock and surprise of the judges, he had what it takes to be an American idol!

The proof is in the pudding (or should we say in the Bonnie Raitt song).

Judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan didn’t expect to see a football player step into their realm. Jones caught the trio off guard with his voice when he sang Tank‘s rendition of the Raitt’s hit “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”

Jones auditioned in Nashville over the summer and now the world is getting to see how it went. This wasn’t part of the normal American Idol auditions, as Jones was unable to move on to Hollywood to compete due to his commitments to the Lions — but he proved he has the singing chops to have a career after football.

Katy Perry, in particular, was blown away by his voice, asking why he didn’t try to have a career in music rather than football. It didn’t take Luke Bryan long to answer from the judge’s desk, saying that not every musician can run a 4.3 40-yard dash.

The full audition will be seen, sometime in the spring when American Idol returns.
