Customers of Wells Fargo bank who are signed up for automatic online bill pay said they were getting double-charged on Wednesday for transactions, in some cases leaving their accounts short by several hundreds of dollars.

The frustrated customers took to social media and reported long wait times when they called the bank’s customer service line. Customers also advised others to check their accounts carefully if they had a scheduled bill payment Wednesday, with many saying an amount equal to twice the bill being paid was deducted from their accounts.
In response to several questions emailed Wednesday night, a spokeswoman for the bank apologized and said Wells Fargo was working to resolve the issue “quickly.”
