According to Deadline, F. Gary Gray, director of Set it OffStraight Outta Compton and The Fate of the Furious, is currently in negotiations to helm the action sci-fi series. Sony Pictures, fresh off major theater success with the remake of Jumanji, starring Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson, will similarly include a new cast in the spin off, as Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, who starred in the first three Men in Black films, will not return.

Sony had originally planned on combining the Men in Black and 21 Jump Street franchises, but have since decided against it. Instead, the spin off will keep the film’s original premise, though Smith’s Agent J and Jones’ Agent K characters will not be re-casted, but will include completely new characters, with one of them likely to be a woman.

The script will be penned by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum of Iron Man fame and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

The spin off is set for a summer 2019 release.
