Words by Comfort Nnana Kalu
Lebron James recently made headlines on Friday after sitting with Kevin Durant and Cari Champion in an interview where he talked about his political views on the President and the affect on the people of the United States.
In response to their discussion, Fox News host Laura Ingraham suggested that James & KD should “shut up and dribble.” LeBron has responded.
In an Instagram post from Friday night, Lebron shared an image with a quote that read “I Am More Than An Athlete,” and captioned the image “#wewillnotshutupanddribble”.
Before Lebron issued his response, Fox and Laura came up with a statement to deny that her words were meant with any racial intent.
Her statement read,
“In 2003, I wrote a New York Times bestseller called ‘Shut Up & Sing,’ in which I criticized celebrities like The Dixie Chicks and Barbara Streisand who were trashing then- President George W. Bush. I have used a variation of that title for more than 15 years to respond to performers who sound off on politics. I’ve told Robert DeNiro to ‘Shut Up & Act,’ Jimmy Kimmel to ‘Shut up and Make Us Laugh’ and just this week told the San Antonio Spurs’ Gregg Popovich to ‘Shut up & Coach.’ ”
Lebron James and any athlete, artist, actress and anyone who has a platform have the freedom to speak up against things that are wrong. Words have power and combined voices have even more power.
