Earlier in the month Milwaukee Bucks guard Sterling Brown was in the news as a victim of excessive police force when a stun gun was used on him during an encounter. ESPN now reports Brown is suing the city of Milwaukee and the police department. The encounter with police was initiated due to a parking violation.
Attorney Mark Thomsen filed the lawsuit against the city and police department stating the officers were “discriminating against Mr. Brown on the basis of his race.” The suit also accuses manipulation of an incident report to justify the treatment against Brown. “Mr. Brown hopes that instead of the typical denial of the claims … the city actually admit to the wrongs, admit that his constitutional rights were violated,” Thomsen shared.
The incident occurred on January 26, 2018, in the parking lot of a Walgreen at 2 a.m. Brown was tasered after he didn’t remove his hands from his pockets as immediately demanded, however, it was later seen that he did not appear threatening to the officers.
Three of the arresting officers received suspensions, however, one of the officers, Erik Andrade, has shown little remorse for the situation. ESPN also states the lawsuit highlights social media posts from Andrade one speaking of meeting Brown again then tagging #FearTheDeer, which is often shared to support the team online. He didn’t stop there though, he also posted to Facebook after the JR Smith incident in Game 1: “I hope JR Smith double parks in Walgreens handicap Parkin spot when he’s in Milwaukee!” The posts were stated to show “admission that he and other Defendant officers are allowed to engage in unlawful attacks of African Americans.”
