Ed Sheeran is on the receiving end of a $100 million lawsuit from a company that owns the copyright to “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye. Dipping back into 2014, the company known as Structured Asset Sales claim Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” single copied the tune, melodies, rhythms, harmonies, and plenty more of the components that went into the Marvin staple.
TMZ reports a third of single’s copyright was purchased after Edward Townsend, co-writer of the song with Gaye, passed back in 2003.
Sheeran’s single is one of the largest of his career, landing a Grammy nod for Record of the Year while winning in the Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year categories. Documents show the single and the album have sold a combined 15 million copies and received a billion plays on Youtube.
This isn’t the first time that Ed Sheeran has had an issue with lawsuits surrounding “Thinking Out Loud,” he was sued back in 2016 by the heirs of Townsend.
This isn’t the first time that a single of Marvin Gaye’s has been called into question regarding more recent work. Robin Thicke and Pharrell were ordered to pay $7.2 million to the family of the later singer for what was believed to be a rip off of “Got to Give It Up” for their smash single “Blurred Lines.”
