Usually, teenage rappers are too busy making melodic tracks about nonsense: such as jewelry, drugs, and women. They also “usually” don’t provide any substance pertaining to lyricism. But 19-year-old rapper Curtis Roach, who hails from Detroit, Michigan, has proven to be the anomaly. Roach has preferred to have his music feature an old-school hip-hop/jazz vibe, with sharp lyrics to match. He released his third project titled Highly Caffeinated in 2017 which got the attention of All Def Digital and Pitchfork Magazine.
“Black Boy Joy,” which is not featured on Highly Caffeinated, was released a couple months ago and showcases Roach’s impressive flow and lyrics over fellow Detroit native J. Dilla’s production. If lyrics and a smooth vibe is your flavor, then “Black Boy Joy” and Curtis Roach is for you.
