Actress Ruby Rose is suiting up to play Batwoman in The CW’s annual crossover special featuring characters from the network’s other DC Comics shows. A standalone Batwoman show is also in the works, with Caroline Dries set to write the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
We struck gold with @RubyRose for Batwoman. No one better.

Rose is best known for her role in the Netflix series Orange is the New Black. She retweeted articles of the news Tuesday and issued a statement on Instagram.
The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.
The character Batwoman is also canonically lesbian, as is Rose, and producers were specifically scouting an actress of the same sexuality to better inform the character. In the comics, Kane’s sexuality gets her kicked out of military school, and she’s fully immersed in the party scene when she meets Batman.
“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence,” reads the official logline. “But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
Batwoman is expected to premiere sometime in 2019.
