Back in 2016, Dallas based artist, Tru Def, made a spontaneous yet very hopeful trip to New York City with the intent to meet Jay-Z. He landed in New York City with no particular plan of action but strong faith that his trip was not in vain.

After trying to convince the receptionist that he had a scheduled meeting with Jay-Z he was politely denied entrance and forced to reevaluate his attempt until his intuition advised him to introduce himself to a random bystander. One thing led to another and Tru Def was then directed to go around a corner and wait by the door for ten minutes. Ten minutes later Jay-Z pulled up, got out of his vehicle and extended his hand for a handshake and some words of advice. Jay-Z stated: “Keep going. Keep your head up. Put in the hard work and eventually it will come”.

Tru Def returned home to Dallas and did exactly as he was advised — nailing opening act performances for T.I., Dave East, Lupe Fiasco, Ludacris, and Bun B. Not stopping at that, Tru Def secured endorsement deals with K Swiss, Monster Headphones, Tanqueray and Microsoft, as well as featuring in a Bud Light commercial alongside Snoop Dogg and Lil Jon.

Tru Def then returned to the Roc Nation offices this past April [2018] upon the release of his most recent project, Dreams II Reality. Obviously having presented some very impressive production and original music, Tru Def has now signed a major distribution deal with Roc Nation’s newest platform, Equity Distribution.

Being able to still remain independent, Tru Def plans to give back to his city by signing artists to his newly formed label, Dream Come Tru Records in hopes to help elevate and mentor artists from his hometown of Dallas, TX.

Tru Def states, “It’s a moment I’ve been working towards since the start of my career. I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
