Are you willing to sacrifice your paycheck to make sure that others are paid an equal and fair wage in the long run? While this may be a tough question to answer for some, for actress Gabrielle Union the answer was a no-brainer. In a video clip from Porter Magazine’s annual “Women In Television” issue, the Being Mary Jane actress opens up about a time when she turned down a role to help another woman get paid her worth, she says:
“Earlier this summer there was a job where I thought a friend had and everyone knew she had that offer and there was a low ball attempt and they were like well, we are going to move on. She was like bet. Then they moved on to me, but that’s my girl, so I was like what you turn down and so I asked for moonstars, rainbows, over that. I had no intention of doing it, I wanted her to get her money. It’s not my job so I lose nothing. It was never my job, to begin with, but, I’m going to make sure that she gets paid.”
She then goes on to say that after she turned the job down since they knew what actresses were all on the list and they were all friends, they just called them up to let them know what was happening which led them to pay her friend “more than what she turned down.”
Now that’s how women come together to leverage pay!
