Move on over reality singing shows. There’s a new show that’s bringing some major heat. It’s official that The Masked Singer is poised to be one of the biggest shows to start off 2019. In its debut on January 2nd, the show put up record numbers in its premiere last night with 9.2 million viewers. According to Deadline, The Masked Singer is the highest rated unscripted debut on any network in seven years, excluding post-NFL, since The X Factor launch in September 2011.
The Masked Singer is the newest reality singing competition television series that is about to take the genre by storm. Based on an international format, South Korea’s King of Mask Singer, and already a viral phenomenon with over half a billion fans worldwide, the series features celebrities facing off against one another with one major twist: each singer is shrouded from head to toe in an elaborate costume, complete with full face mask to conceal his or her identity. A total of 12 celebrities will appear and compete on the show over ten episodes. With each performance, the host, panelists, audience, viewers and even the other contestants are left guessing who is singing behind the mask.
The show is hosted by media mogul Nick Cannon and he’s accompanied by celebrity panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, and Robin Thicke.
After a record-setting debut, Nick Cannon has another hit on his hands. Cannon is the producer, creator, and host of the hugely successful sketch comedy show Wild ‘N Out. Last year, he concluded a cross-country live tour featuring Wild ‘N Out comics and improvisation artists.
The Masked Singer comes on Wednesday’s at 9 PM Eastern Standard time on FOX.
