Before BET ever thought about hosting an award show to honor Hip-Hop artists, before Kanye West snatched the mic from Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards or The Grammy’s wanted to consider rap songs in their best pop category, The Source Awards was the only outlet with a dedicated to honoring outstanding rap acts on the season.

Who can forget all the classic moments the show produced? Outkast let the world know that “The South has something to say!” Puff, Biggie and all that was Bad Boy let the world know that the New York made music that made you want to swag on everyone around, and dance like only the cool kids in the cool table in their lunchroom can do. But mostly, when you think of The Source awards, people think about the legendary scene that then Death Row owner, Suge Knight made when he grabbed the mic.

Big bad bully Suge went before his peers and let off verbal rounds that seemed to be targeted at Sean “then Puff Daddy” Combs. He said:

“To all you artists out there, who don’t wanna be on a record label where the executive producer’s …all up in the videos, all on the records, dancin’ …then come to Death Row!”

That quote continues to be one of the most referenced quotes of Hip-Hop history.

So much so, an entire generation later, young college students reference it with ease. Case in point, yesterday after The Clemson University Tigers won the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship, Clelin Ferell remixed saying:

“If you want to come to a program, where you have to worry about your coach …all up in the locker room dancing! Come to Death Valley!”

Look at us. The Source is still out here making an impact on folk all across the world.
