Last week we collectively as a nation celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on what would’ve been his 90th birthday — an age he definitely could’ve lived to see given that the oldest living person is 116 years old. Many people spent the day celebrating Black culture, looking back on his many contributions to the world or quite frankly just staying warm on what was easily one of the coldest days on the East Coast. For Union Los Angeles, the Cali-based retailer chose to celebrate by hitting up the MLK Day parade in Leimert Park to shoot their latest pieces for Feb 2019.
Given that February also marks Black History Month, the pieces hold a certain element that ties in with the day and the brand’s ethos in general. One shirt in particular imagines what Malcolm X’s Africa tour merch would have looked like (seen above), while another merges Outkast’s classic 1996 ATLliens album logo with the actual Aliens movie released 10 years prior. The rest of set is comprised of other tees, in addition to totes, hoodies and sweat apparel. As MLK himself wanted to unite the racially divided world we lived in back in the 1960s, this set of gear that brings together different pop culture references really comes full circle.
