Famed fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has passed away at age 85. He was in Paris, France at the time of his death.

Lagerfeld was known for his work as the creative director of Chanel and Fendi, carrying an aura of the pinnacle of the fashion world until his death. Reports state Lagerfeld was not well for several weeks, resulting in missed fashion shows.

“We are deeply saddened to learn the news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing today,” said Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council. “His unrivaled contribution to the fashion industry changed the way women dress and perceive fashion. He inspired generations of young designers and will continue to do so.”

The career of Lagerfeld started as a design assistant for Pierre Balmain before moving on to Fendi and Chloe in the 1960s, then working in his most prominent role at Chanel.
