A tenacious songwriter building a reputation rooted in his innate ability to translate his experiences into gritty street anthems, Brooklyn-based rapper Poppa Da Don is winning over new audiences with each release. Born and raised in Brownsville, the 24-year-old (real name Khalid Cross Williams) has a commanding presence that demands respect, while cultivating an audience that is drawn to his authenticity and drive. In 2017, his reach grew tenfold, releasing a remix of 6ix9ine’s viral earworm “GUMMO,” titled “GUMMO CRIPPY.” The song quickly cultivated over a million views upon release, even catching the attention of Nipsey Hussle, who soon reached out to the rapper to shoot the music video for “Rap N—as,” appearing on his Grammy-nominated album Victory Lap, on Poppa’s block. In June 2018, he released Fucc Wit Da Cuz. Notably, the project also featured his first collaboration with Dave East (“Crip Shit”), further solidifying how New York is recognizing the Brooklyn upstart’s efforts and showing love back.
