Hold on to your hearts…

Sam Smith returns with the debut of “Drowning Shadows”.  A soberly pensive tune which premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show earlier this Monday.

Back in November of last year, Sam graced the world with one of 2014’s greatest albums, In The Lonely Hour.  “Drowning Shadows” is the first new record since that, aside from the 007 theme song, “Writing’s On The Wall”.

This song is the saddest song I’ve ever written and the least radio-friendly song I’ve ever written.  I wanted to leave people on this artistic little song and this moment.

Smith stated and also went and premiered the song on instagram, with the caption, “Brace yourself…. It’s a sad one.  But I’m very proud of this song.  It’s insanely personal to me.”

Although the record sets a melancholy mood, the reality he expresses is passionate and relatively true.  Having loved this record, Smith chose not to release it because the production wasn’t right, until now.  At the time of composition, he expresses being in a very sad and lonely place.  The music he makes is always a reflection of his bona-fide life situation.

The somber yet magnificent tune is part of Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour: Drowning Shadows Edition which is set to release on November 6th.  “Drowning Shadows” will be featured on the new 2-disc edition, which will also consist of bonus versions of other songs, as well as new covers.  There will also be an acoustic version of “Omen” along with a live version of his hit record, “Latch”.  Personally, I’m waiting on that Mary J. Blige collab and definitely looking forward to his rendition of the late great Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know”.

Model: Denise Mercedes

Measurements: 42,33,48

As of recent, being plus size has become more socially acceptable than ever.  With a considerable number of poppin fashion bloggers, displaying unique styles, places to shop for the latest in trends etc., more and more women are becoming open to embracing and celebrating their curves.

I came across plus size model, Denise Mercedes, on social media several months back and have been a supporter of her ever since.  She is goal oriented, confident, ambitious and a positive role model who is inspired to teach young women to love themselves.  Get familiar with her below and check out her dope style gallery!

Evie B: So tell us where you’re from Denise!  The city you rep and your ethnicity.

Denise M:  Well I was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey and I am 100% Dominican.

Evie B: Ha! Dimelo!, A fellow Dominicana!  That’s fly, so how old are you and when did you get into modeling?

Denise M: I’m 24 years young

Evie B: What?! You’re super young!

Denise M: I know! I don’t look that young though, lol.  I started modeling a while ago, when I was about 13 years old.  I worked at a photography studio at the time, filing papers, and would see all these models come in to shoot.  I’d tell myself I wanted to model like them and not sit here in the office, filing.  One day I asked my boss if it was ok for me to invite a friend over to take pictures at the studio with our phones.  My boss was cool with it so ever since that, my friend and I would take pics all the time, but instead of using our phones, I saved up and bought a $600 camera.  The quality of my photography improved, and it was history from then on.

Evie B: That’s awesome, so you were inspired at an early age.  Now regardless of how favorable plus size modeling has become, there are still many women who don’t feel they are adequate enough to model, of course, due to insecurities about their size and weight.  Not every plus size girl is brave enough to step in that lane, in fear of being harshly criticized.  What drives you to pursue that and not let anything negative get in the way?

Denise M: I get criticized all the time, well not all the time but I do get those one or 2 negative comments here and there.  Honestly, it’s a bad feeling when sometimes I have to wake up to comments like “ew you look disgusting or lose some weight you fat whale” so yeah it’s definitely hard but why would I let something stupid stop me from what I love to do?  I mean, if I let these people stop me, then they would be winning.

Evie B: I completely agree with you.  With the way that society operates today, primarily on social media, at any point did it scare you?

Denise M: Not really because at the time I began to gain popularity, plus size models were already trending so I felt like I was going to fit in right away. The only thing that annoys me is that many photographers have a thin model preference. They’re afraid of working with plus size models for some reason.

Evie B: Those photographers are just afraid to step out of what they are used to. I think you’re dope; I particularly followed you because you have great style and you inspired me to be more self-assured, which I’m sure is the reason many other women support you as well

. Have you ever done any runway?

Denise M: Yes! I like showing women that you don’t have to be thin to look cute . For example, crop tops, I love crop tops!  They are my favorite but many plus size girls wouldn’t wear them, so in many pictures I like to rock crop tops so bigger women can see that it is okay to wear them even if you aren’t slim.
I’ve never walked the runway, by the way, I’m more of a picture model.  Walking in heels is tough.

Evie B: What are some of your short and long term goals for yourself in the plus modeling industry?

Denise M: My goals for the plus size industry are to become as successful as Denise Bidot and Ashley Graham. I’d also love  to model for big companies such as Forever21 and Macy’s.

Evie B: People often say that plus sized women are unhealthy but that isn’t always the case. What are your thoughts on that?

Denise M: Yes, people do often say that plus size models are unhealthy but that is not true all the time. I am sure there are several plus size models who aren’t in the greatest health but that is because they don’t take good care of their bodies. Whether someone is big or thin, they should always take care of their bodies by drinking a substantial amount of water daily and hitting the gym three to four times a week. I can’t speak on behalf of all plus size models because I don’t know how they live their lives, however, I can speak for myself because although I am plus size, I always make sure that I don’t go past a certain weight.  In addition, I always make sure I get my cardio in so that my heart is healthy.

Evie B: Great words! Thanks for allowing us into your life.  What’s your message for aspiring plus size models and just plus women in general?

Denise M: Thanks for having me.  My message to aspiring plus size models is to never quit . If you really want to become a plus size model, then work for it and it will happen.

You may not be able to pin point what to call the genre-hopping track “Letter to God” by Jared Scott Perry, but it’s a given that you’ll know it’s dope. The Harlem native and his production team demonstrate keen musical understanding in allowing the beat to breathe before Perry hops on at the 0:35 mark.

“Letter to God’ plays like the late night prayer of any struggling artist, hungry to get put on. Influences of Marvin Gaye and the Jackson’s are palpable, as is his grooming. Perry is part of the alumni at the prestigious LaGuardia performing arts high school (same as Nicki Minaj), where he found his gift for music.

Listen below and don’t forget to keep an eye on this star on the rise.

In a reminder just how large Michael Jackson’s reach still is , and how incredible music can unite, PBS ARTS kicked off their Fall Festival by presenting The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson, stating that the night was just about that: Unity.

The rousing show offered classics bi-lingually performed with as much energy as the late great performer himself. On this night, music was all encompassing, as awarding-winning Latin artists were accompanied by a 37-piece orchestra, to perform the songs from Tony Succar’s album of the same name. Angel Lopez’s rendition of The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” hit the perfect nostalgic sweet spot, which had the crowd jumping to their feet. Jean Rodriguez’ soulful delivery of “Smooth Criminal” proved to be another standout, taken to the next level by the ever-talented Shelia E. (who MC’d the night, and wowed the crowd on her own with several outfit changes) when she took the stage to show why she’s a world renowned drummer and percussionist.

As amazing as the upbeat tracks were, Jon Secada pulled on the heart strings of the crowd with his styling of “You Are Not Alone.” However, the most touching moment perhaps, came from Judith Hill, singing “Earth Song”, Ms. Hill was one of Michael’s most special back-up singers,as she was even chosen as his duet partner for “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” on his “This Is it” Tour, the one he would never see come to fruition.  After that moment of reflection, Kevin Ceballo’s “Black or White” got the crowd back on their feet, belting notes and hitting octaves into the stratosphere. The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson concluded with the song we’ve all sang to ourselves before, “Man in the Mirror, performed by several of the artists that had already graced the stage. This touching performance, as well as the rest of the show, was a lesson in just how easily music can bridge the gaps we may think we have over cultural, background, ethnicity or religious lines.

Run DMC and Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way”, Lincoln Park and Jay-Z’s “Encore”; unexpected mash-Ups have turned seemingly crazy ideas into epic music moments. In keeping with that tradition, the most random of pairings has birthed a fire track.

The Migos remix of Fall Out Boy’s “Irresistible” feels fresh, with Patrick Stump’s soulful vocals serving as the preamble to a fitting Migos verse over an 808 driven beat. As a band, Fall Out Boy is no stranger to Hip-Hop collaborations as the remixed version of their latest album entitled Make America Psycho Again, includes several acts such as Wiz Khalifa and Big K.R.I.T., so when it comes to a this genre blending style, they know how to do it right.

For those frustrated with depictions of the female submissive, seen most recently in Fifty Shades of Grey, rising star, Armenian-American beauty, Eliza, turns that cliche on it’s head in the stylized video for her single “Do You Like That?” In place of the infamous red room, the blue eyed songstress dons flowing red locks instead,as she seduces her pretty boy prey over a slow, writhing beat.

The song features and is produced by KO the Legend.  It is the third release in 2015 for the singer, who shows no signs of slowing down.  The songstress has only been dropping original music since April 2015, under her own April Fools Records imprint, and she has already managed to collaborate with credible artists, such as Taylor Gang member, Raven Felix, HBK affiliates, The Kid Ryan and Prince Solé.

It isn’t just music.  Eliza‘s business acumen is something to be admired in its own right.  Shortly after launching April Fools Records, Eliza created her B.A.B.E.$ (Brains and Beauty Equal $uccess) movement with the intention of galvanizing likeminded women and motivating them to pursue their ambitions of beauty and education.  Her purpose is to inspire other women to be successful while embracing and celebrating their femininity.  Eliza‘s laser focus, undeniable talent and passion for feminine equality make her an artist to watch in the coming years!

Check out the visual to her latest single below and be sure to visit Elizalovezmusic.com for those B.A.B.E.$ beanies!

These women have such incredible chemistry, it’s tough to take your eyes off them when they do anything together.  Not only do they rock damn well on records, but their stage presence is epic and they look gorgeous doing what they do best.  You can really feel how heavy they f**k with each other.  Like Hello?  Do you hear the crowd? Support is a beautiful thing.

Beyoncé performed alongside Nicki Minaj for the charity concert Tidal X : 1020, which went down last night in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, and man was that sh*t lit as ever!  The concert previously reported that 100% of the proceeds will go to charity.  Look out for other great performances to come, for they definitely made sure this event was worth every penny.

On Modern Artillery, Sahdeeq further cements his place in rap’s history with some Boom bap help from the gifted Amsterdam-based beatsmith, Big Ape, with cuts courtesy of Sweden’s, DJ Devastate, a large portion of the project was recorded out in Amsterdam while the rapper was touring Europe in 2012, which also inspired the project’s name.

I realized I was using my art as a weapon,” he said. “Peep the hidden message in the title: Modern ART-ill-ery.

The EP also boasts the likes of Outerspace, Ruste Juxx, Reef the Lost Cauze, Torae, 8thw1, and the late, PH (PumpkinHead). Those last three actually show up on the closing track, “Men of Respect,” an ill posse cut that concludes the project with a commemorative feel. The release represents a collaboration with Dutch/Swedish label Elite Fleet Records, and it’s actually their debut project. Modern Artillery is now available through all major digital retailers, and a limited-edition tape version drops Oct. 17 on Cassette Store Day. A vinyl edition is in the works…stay tuned!

Is it me, or is Fetty Wap that dude right now?  With back to back hits, his debut album at #1, it doesn’t look like the buzz will die for the New Jersey rapper anytime soon.

In a recent interview with Revolt, Zack, (French Montana’s Brother) announced a collaborative project between Fetty Wap and the Coke Boys‘ head honcho, French Montana.  He speaks about the vibe between the 2 fellas on tour, how the concept of working together felt inevitable, and states that the project is finished and will be releasing in the very near future.

With the success and hype coming from Drake and Future’s What a Time to Be Alive, it’s safe to assume that the Coke Zoo alliance could have been influenced by the two.  What better time than now huh?

Look out for Coke Zoo coming soon and hit the play button above to peep the interview with Zack on Revolt.

If you’re looking for gully Hip-Hop that remains authentic while never taking itself too seriously, Orlando-by-way-of-Queens’s Red Eye should most certainly be on your radar. And he drives that point home throughout his newly released visuals for “24 Barbarian Pt. 7,” the DJ Tray-produced burner off his ongoing freeverse project.

As you can hear on this track, Red Eye’s balance of humor and bully raps brings to mind what cemented the late Sean Price’s place in Hip-Hop’s hall of fame. In one line, he’s talking about stealing your girl in a ridiculous way, and in another he’s dropping slick references to the legendary Konami code and NES classic Contra (“Up up, down down, y’all n*ggas are contradictions/ Left right, left right/ select to start a sentence”). And in between spitting those bars, you’ll watch as the rapper also known as Fatrick Ewing (lol) gets lifted with his friends and chills in his Ozone stomping grounds.

Whether you know him for his solo work or time spent rhyming with groups The Closers and Infiniti Gauntlet, this much remains true: you need to be paying attention to Red Eye.

R&B has turned from strictly baby making odes, to unrequited love, into the complete 180 degree turn of the anti-love song. However, contemporarily, the genre has become a musical blank canvas where artists can blend their influences and experiment with sounds and subject matter. With his latest release, Backseat Memories, Harlem based crooner LoVel capitalizes on the current climate of R&B.

LoVel uses his sultry falsetto as a vehicle to transcend listeners from the no-strings-attached attitude of summertime into the first rounds of cuffing season. And the stand-out anthem of this season is the seductive “Me Too”, which serenades his shorty’s mind as well as her curves.  “The Calling” is a another refreshing glimpse into LoVel’s sound. The uptempo track–with it’s echoing production–doesn’t play like anything else in heavy rotation yet, immediately makes the listener feel as though it should be the recipient of heavy spins.

Within the roster of other R&B artists, consider LoVel somewhere between the guy all too thirsty for multiple dances after buying you a single drink and that other guy, who spent the night reminding you that “these hoes ain’t loyal.”  Throughout Backseat Memories, the theme of youth’s reckless abandon over trance-y beats with sexy baselines, connects the listener to the signature sound of LoVel; this paired with the fact that there are only two features on it’s entirety, allows fans to familiarize with the artist, in a really organic way.

Backseat Memories is now available for free download here! Enjoy.

Hailing from Silver Spring, MD, 23 year old rapper, Bou is here to deliver his latest club thumpin single, “Side B*tch”.

Innovative beats are his forte, considering his extensive percussion skills, however, an interesting turn of events quickly ignited his passion for artistry.  Shortly after graduating high school, Bou was accepted to Howard University, and during his freshman year went through a law enforcement incident which resulted in him being on house arrest for five months.  Being socially limited due to his 5 p.m. curfew, his friend Jason Harris (aka JHarissBeats) would visit, hang out and play a variety of his beats.  On one particular occassion, Bou requested some production from his friend via email and it was history from there.  The rap artist was born.

A few short months after his initial inspiration, Bou released his first mixtape, Rough Draft, in 2012. From this platform, he began to pursue his career in rap. With positive feedback and support from his community, Bou released his second mixtape, Thesis, in 2013. Since catching the attention of listeners, Bou has created a buzz in the DMV Hip-Hop community.

Bou counts Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G., Fabolous, T.I., and J. Cole as his musical inspirations. He was also heavily influenced by up and coming local rapper and childhood friend Frank Diggy, who was murdered in late 2012. Bou describes his music as “raw rap, authentic, and from the heart.” He raps about his life experiences in the streets in combination with what he has learned in the classroom.

On September 4th, Pennsylvania rapper Quazelle announced the release of new material after a long hiatus, by tweeting “It’s been close to 2 years since I last released any music, but I’m ready to give ya’ll some new sounds today!” As optimistic as that tweet may sound, the subject matter on the newest track hints that his time off could have been a period of reevaluating trust.

“Motives”,which features Spoon Dollaz, tells the story of a man fed up with people’s shady intentions. Over an eerie beat (produced by Fayo & Chill) that’s part opening credits of an 80’s horror movie and part chilly synthesizer simplicity, Quazelle warns his “sometimes” acquaintances that he peeps game:  “I’m busy, now they wanna make time for me. Tell me they love me but, they lyin’ to me…I’m a man now. So many more things that I understand now.”

If this earlier tweet was the informal announcement of Quazelle’s return, then consider “Motives” his official kick-off anthem. And for all those who still have their hand out, consider this your eviction notice.

It’s been two long years since British Hip Hop artist Presha J released his last single ‘Throw It In The Air’, and nearly a decade since his debut EP, Changes, was released in 2008. After taking time away from music for life and to start a family, the London native is proud to be back, with the announcement of his sophomore EP, Traveller’s Guide, which is to be released on October 23 via Writeway Music.

Leading Presha J’s triumphant, no holds barred, return to the music landscape is new single ‘Live For You’ featuring emerging singer-songwriter Leke, and produced by Smylee (Victizzle, Faith Child). Accompanied by thematic and abstract visuals directed by Dvisionaiir, ‘Live For You’ is an upbeat, inspiration and life-affirming opus, backed by thumping drums, an infectious bassline and heavy synths, over which Presha J waxes lyrical about standing firm in his faith.

Speaking about his departure from music, Presha J confesses, “I never meant for there to be such a gap in between my work. I was still creating music while I was planning to get married but I felt that God had other plans and I quickly learned that something had to give”, adding about his new EP that, “I’ve grown up a lot since ‘Changes’, which was more about my testimony. I wanted this new project to take my listeners on a trip from a more mature viewpoint”.

With support from Channel AKA, Capital Xtra, Bang Radio, Kiss TV and Smash Hits TV, early in his career, plus rave reviews and critical acclaim for his Changes EP, Presha J had been hailed as one of the finest and most promising Hip Hop artists in the UK. This comeback record Traveller’s Guide is poised to solidify that early promise and acclaim from years ago, starting with the exciting new offering ‘Live For You’.
