While we await the October 13th arrival of that The Saga Continues Wu-Tang Clan outing, member U-God, born Lamont Hawkins, has been cooking up a piece of work of his own in the form of a new book, RAW: My Journey Into the Wu-Tang Clan.

Set for release in March of 2018, the book will serve as a memoir chronicling Golden Arms’ childhood, his jounrey in the Wu-Tang clan, and the success that followed.

“It’s time to write down not only my legacy, but the story of nine dirt-bomb street thugs who took our everyday life—scrappin’ and hustlin’ and tryin’ to survive in the urban jungle of New York City—and turned that into something bigger than what we could possibly imagine,” says the Brooklyn-reared emcee. “Something that took us out of the projects for good, which was the only thing we all wanted in the first place.”

Last year, U-God sued other member of the Clan to the tune of  $2.5 million, alleging that he’d written over 150 songs in the crew’s lifespan and hadn’t seen any royalties for six years, and didn’t get a cut from the controversial sale of the one-of-a-kind Once Upon a Time in Shaolin album.

Ellenwood, Georgia is a suburb just southeast of Atlanta, and to some, is known specifically as the point of origin of the Crime Mob collective. Aside from that, it goes quiet, typically grouped together and generalized with a simple “Atlanta” whenever a resident is prompted on where they’re from.

But it’s quite the opposite for Jaye Newton. “Ellenwood, Georgia. Eastside of Atlanta,” is his primal response. It’s where he went to middle school and high school. It’s where he got his game. It’s where he started rapping.

East Atlanta is called home by the likes of Gucci Mane, 21 Savage, and the aformentioned Mob to name a few, and always serves as the gritty backdrop to the narratives that comes packaged within these artists’ repertory.

“You see that hands-on–on Bouldercrest, on Snapfinger–there was a lot of negativity, but there’s a lot of positivity,” says the 21-year old Newton. “I don’t feel like there’s a lot of positive reresentation, so I always wanted to flourish with that positivity in my music.”

Since his first take to the booth, an experience he describes as an attempt to emulate Crime Mob over the beat to Young Jeezy’s “Standing Ovation” in the fourth grade, he’s gone on to rack up a total of four projects, each one cultivating a new step in his growth along the way, and leading him up to his debut album–Real Men Wear Pink.

“The title stems from my studies of colors and their meanings,” explains Jaye. “I have a mild case of synesthesia so, I can hear colors on a daily basis and have an understanding of color’s effect on emotions. Pink is the color of love, vulnerability, feminism, affection and inner peace—all topics I wore on my sleeve while writing this album.”

While Jaye  represents East Atlanta, his sound is far from the region’s archetype, and his debut effort puts that fact on display from start to finish. With production being handled by collaborator Bossman on all but one of the tracks, RMWP is a cohesive work that maintains its consistency without the overbearing and, often times, corny implication of a theme. Each track stands on its own, but make magic when forged together.

“Besides Crime Mob our city hasn’t had a specific sound or artist to champion,” he says of Ellenwood. “Bossman and I plan to accomplish that feat with this project.”

Take a listen to the full project below.

Oh, (y)our beloved POTUS.

There’s never a dull moment where Donald Trump is concerned and while most of the country has their eyes on an imminent nuclear threat and the devastation of natural disasters throughout the mainland’s coasts and island territories, the President of the United States has managed to make headlines this weekend for all the wrong reasons.

On top of his referring to NFL players who protest the National Anthem as “sons of b-tches” who need to be fired,  he also went on to his preferred medium of choice to take a quick shot at Golden State Warriors’ point guard Steph Curry.

It seems he didn’t take to kindly to the team’s slow response after extending an invitation to visit the White House following Golden State’s championship victory earlier this year, and in one fell swoop he rescinded the invitation.

“Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team,” wrote Trump in a tweet. “Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!”

When the Warriors’ first laid claim to their victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer, questions did arise on whether or not the team would be going to the White House to meet with the president as is the tradition.

After a while, chatter around the subeject fell silent and almost went by unnoticed. But, nothing’s truly ever silent where The Donald is involved, is it?

Check out Twitter’s most poignant, and often hilarious, responses to the latest in Donald Trump’s antics.

Now, the multi-hyphenate has crafted up a new outing to officially usher in a new transformation and subsequent chapter in her life. In a new track, described as “culture driven”, the newly-named Bianca Bonnie gifts us with the fruit of her renewal.

G Herbo’s debut Welcome to Fazoland mixtape arrived in September of 2012, officially, and rightfully entering him into the ranks of the rising class of Hip-Hop’s future. Now five years later, give or take a few days, Herbo will finally unleash his long-awaited studio debut in the form of Humble Beast, set to invade speakers on September 22.
Since its inception, Herb’s career has boasted decorated honors, including memorable guest spots alongside Nicki Minaj, fellow hometown heroes Common and Chance the Rapper, and the well-earned distinction of being a XXL Freshman in 2016. For those unfamiliar with G Herbo’s sound, a catalog of five projects to date boasts his clear contribution in the resurgence of willful lyricism amid a dominating drill scene in his native Chicago.
Ahead of the release of Humble Beast, we caught up with the 21-year old emcee as he broke down the formula behind the forthcoming culmination of everything that’s made him the artist he is today.
You previously said that you wanted Humble Beast to be a merge between Reasonable Doubt and Illmatic. When you said that, were you pointing to the sound you’re bringing this time or the influence overall?
The influence. I want it to have the same influence as Reasonable Doubt; Illmatic. It’s going to grasp who I am, my story, where I come from, who I wanna be. Illmatic and Reasonbale Doubt told a story about where Nas and Jay-Z come from, where they wanna be and where they are now, what it took to get there. That’s what I want my album to resemble.
Is there any particular story, or content that you’re bringing into the project that you previously haven’t brought to the table before?

It reflects on everything that I’ve been through in my life, you know what I’m saying? It shows who I am today. It tells the story of me being a sixteen, seventeen year old young man from Chicago, growing up in a poverty stricken neighborhood to me doing everything that I’m doing now.

Image via Eric Johnson

Aside from Humble Beast, you’re also working on a few joint projects, you got Swervo with Southside and No Limitations with Bibby. As humble beast rolls out are you going to start shifting your focus on wrapping those up?
My focus is still going to be on Humble Beast; promoting it. I’m putting a big tour together, Humble Beast tour, and I’ll pretty much be touring all of October, all of November. I want it to be a memorable experience for my fans. I want to leave them with a piece of me. That’s my focus on top of getting out Swervo and No Limitations. It’s all the same thing. It’s all the same boat. I can’t put my focus more into one thing than the other. That’s what being an artist is all about–being able to balance out all of the things that you have to focus on.
As far as everything you’ve been doing to prepare for this moment, can you pinpoint any definitive experience that affected you throughout the project?
Pressure. Pressure from my fans, me losing people in the streets that are close to me. All that played a big part. It took a toll on me, focusing and working as an artist, trying to get my music out played a big role on me being under pressure. When I’m under pressure, it makes me better. It makes me strive to be a better artist. When certain situations come my way, negative, positive, whatever, I just use it as fuel to my fire.
I want to be better than I was yesterday. Being an artist, you’re going to always deal with family stuff, stuff in the streets, social media BS, you know? I really use it as fuel to get my album out, and make sure that my album is my best project, or the best debut album. That’s what I strive for it to be. I use certain situations and scenarios and things that I go through in life to make that happen.

What a night.

Red Bull Culture Clash is only a few hours away and returning champion Popcaan has just announced that due to unforeseen circumstances he will not be joining his crew Unruly onstage as they battle it out with three other contenders.

#STRONGERNOW??

A post shared by 876GUD (@popcaanmusic) on

Naturally, one’s first instinct to is to give it to EarDrummers as the cards are now officially in their favor. With Culture Clash staged in label head and producer Mike Will Made It’s stomping grounds of Atlanta for a competition dictated by crowd response, and his fiercest competition missing its pertinent leader, this can only go one way.

The other competition present come in the forms of Tinie Tempah’s Disturbing London squadron and producer-prodigy WondaGurl’s EnjoyLife Crew.

There’s no doubt that the talent is definitely there. These teams are headed up by the Hip-Hop artist with the most No. 1 singles in the UK and the mastermind behind standouts like Jay-Z’s “Crown” and Travis Scott’s “Antidote”, respectively, after all.

But the harsh reality of either team’s namesakes permeating conversation in the Southern capital to the extent that Popcaan and Mike Will have creates an obvious barrier that while dislodged, proved to be insurmountable in the end.

For those unfamiliar with the setting, Red Bull Culture Clash is a competition drawing its inspiration from traditional Jamaican sound clashes. The four crews mentioned were pitted against one another at Atlanta’s fitting 787 Windsor venue, occupying four seperate corners as they worked to claim the throne of Culture Clash Royalty.

“It’s a culture that’s always been around, but the way that’s it’s put together by Red Bull, it’s a new thing. It’s happening in a new time. It’s going to be something that’s going to stick around,” Tinie Tempah told us a few hours before the show kicked off.

“These events are very important because they’ve got a sound system from London, Canada, Jamaica, and Atlanta,” the UK heavyweight noted. “How many events in the world can you go to and experience something like that?”

As expected, the spotlight ultimately fell on a heated battle between EarDrummers and Unruly, and as the title indicates, the latter eventually reigned supreme.

The crew did the missing Popcaan proud as they energized a crowd that awaited the unrealized arrival of the Jamaican hitmaker’s first stateside performance.

Notably taking over the task of ringleader was Unruly’s DJ Jabba, easily assuming a massive personality as he maintained control of a crowd who came prepared to represent with plenty of Jamaican flags, and the signature Unruly hand signal in abundance.

But the competition certainly remained stiff until the very end.

So much so that the decibel meter that determines who gains the most support from the audience presented only a difference of .2 points between Unruly and EarDrummers by the final count.

So much so that a crowd of hundreds split right down the middle as EarDrummers’ fans cries of “ATL” competed with equal shouts of “Unruly.”

So much so that Ludacris and Jermaine Dupri, the ultimate duo, were divided between stages as Unruly viciously followed up EarDrummers and Ludacris’ wild performance of “Move B*tch” with Dupri’s shattering “Welcome to Atlanta.”

The tactics are different.

EarDrummers’ succeeded at exuded hometown pride as they brought out an arsenal of Atlanta’s finest. This included appearances from Rae Sremmurd, OJ da Juiceman, the aforementioned Luda, Crime Mob, and even Pusha T just to name a few.

Unruly captivated the crowd with a combination of dubs of dancehall favorites including Beenie Man’s “Who Am I,” and Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam” while putting playful twists on current smashes like Young M.A’s “Ooh,” where the Brooklyn emcee lent her vocals to switch up a few lyrics, “They hate Unruly, but they broke though/ And when it’s time to battle, they a no show.”

Some jabs are hilariously callous and they’re all far from covert. Pride was the name of Culture Clash’s game, something that ATLiens and island natives & descendants have plenty of.

Disturbing London and EnjoyLife weren’t going down without a fight either.

As the former brought out three coffins sporting the competition’s names for all to see and recruited the likes of the Ying Yang Twins, Pastor Troy, and Sonny Digital, the latter’s Jamaican bloodline decidedly challenged the authenticity of Unruly’s camp, while both squads and EarDrummers all exploited Popcaan’s absence, throwing bags of Popcorn into the crowd as a clever replacement.

Despite a playfully divisive energy, Unruly’s end goal was achieved, proof that Dancehall’s evergrowing presence, similar to its Hip-Hop counterpart,  has achieved the undeniable feat of translating virtually anywhere.

“Dancehall, Reggae, Hip-Hop is black culture,” was Unruly’s message before they took to the stage Friday night (August 25). “It’s just black people unifying and creating music. It’s about sounds. It’s about us enjoying our own individual sounds.

“The same way Dancehall culture is sometimes influenced by Hip-Hop, it’s vice versa. Music is for all of us. None of us own it. Even a different platform–you might say a white platform, it’s exposure of the culture.”

The Red Bull Culture Clash is, quite possibly, one of the greatest things to happen to music.

This time last year, the stage was set in London’s O2 Arena as 4 crews reperesenting Hip-Hop, UK Garage & Grime, and Dancehall, respectively, battled it out in a show of epic proportions.

For those unfamiliar with the setting, Red Bull’s Culture Clash draws inspiration from traditional Jamaican sound clashes, pitting notable crews against one another in a series of sets that include custom dubs, special performances, and as many special guests as you see fit.

This time around, Red Bull is bringing the fesitivites to Atlanta, a cultural breeding ground in its own rite, and it all kicks off tonight (Friday, August 25).

On the bill, you’ll find Popcaan, making his return to defend the title he won alongside Brooklyn’s Mixpak last year with a buzzer-beating dub of Drake’s “One Dance.” This year, however, he’s stepping in with his own Unruly crew (Squid, Jabba, Jazzy T, Sir DJ Corey, Petro and Kamar Petrekin) to rightfully bring honor to the Dancehall namesake.

He’ll be pitted against Tinie Tempah and the Disturbing London roster (Charlie Sloth, Yxng Bane, Yungen, A2, DJ Charlesy and Mr. Play), Toronto’s WondaGurl as she gets backup from her Enjoylife crew (Southside, TM88, Nessly, Rich Kidd and Bluxz), and making his Culture Clash debut is Mike Will Made-It as he prepares to roll through with the EarDrummers set (DJ Cash, DJ Osh, Eearz, Jace of Two-9, Aubz and Bwrightous), featuring a performance from Rae Sremmurd.

And just in case it wasn’t enough culture for you, it’s all hosted by DJ Drama.

Naturally, its all fun and games, but not without a few ground rules:

1. Red Bull Culture Clash is split into four rounds, each with its own format.

2. Crews can play dubplate specials and custom dubs, bring out special guests, and do special performances throughout the whole night. However, in Round 4, ONLY dubs or special guest performances are allowed. Playing a regular record will lead to disqualification from that round.

3. Strictly no repeats! If a crew plays a record already played earlier in the night, they’re disqualified from winning that round. Only exception: the record is explicitly announced as a counteraction and somehow altered (dubplate, remix, live performance, et al.).

4. Each round is won by crowd reaction via a decibel reader (highest average during the first five seconds). There is no winner for Round One. Round Four counts double. If two crews are held to a draw after Round Four, the host calls for the crowd to choose between the two crews in a runoff. Since the last round counts double, all four crews still have a chance to win until the very end.

If you find yourself missing out on all the action in the ‘A’, Red Bull has got you covered with a live stream, complete with a pre-show preview hosted by Max Glazer of the Federation Sound and Sir Foster, also known as everyone’s favorite NBA pianist (ATL Hawks).

The Culture Clash preview starts at 8 PM EST and will include live interviews and crew breakdowns, while the main event starts up at 9 PM EST.

Hospitality service AirBnb has been the subject of much criticism in the past for its enabling of discrimination on its home-sharing platform.

In a slew of public relations initiatives, the company has attempted to clean house in displaying its push for diversity and inclusion and its latest move comes with bringing actor and notable activist Danny Glover on as an adviser to better engage communities of color.

“Many people know Mr. Glover from his memorable performances in world-renowned films and television programs, but progressives throughout America and the world know Mr. Glover as a steadfast advocate for social justice,” said Janaye Ingram, AirBnb’s director of partnerships. “For more than five decades, Mr. Glover has fought for economic empowerment in communities of color. We’re honored to be working with him to ensure that all guests feel at home on Airbnb—no matter who they are, what they look like, or where they’re from.”

This follows up on the company’s latest partnership with the NAACP which resulted in a commitment in March of this year to double the number of hosts in communities populated by minorities.

Just last month, they  announced a collaboration with the organization to design classes aimed toward educating communities of color on the economic benefits of hosting homes.

“I know Airbnb has had its own share of challenges in this arena, but working with them, I’ve seen firsthand how committed they are to getting it right,” Glover wrote in a statement. “I have been incredibly heartened to see the resources, desire, and drive they are directing towards ensuring that their service is used fairly and inclusively.

“I want to challenge each of you to make a commitment to help one person, one organization, one situation that touches your heart,” said Rihanna. “My grandmother always used to say if you have a dollar, there’s plenty to share.”

Logic has earned another plaque as his critically-acclaimed Everybody album officially achieves the status of being certified Gold.

In just under two months, the rapper’s third studio album has pushed 500,000 units to receive the distinction from the RIAA.

Prior to this achievement, Everybody also produced two gold singles in the forms of the title track and “1-800-273-8255,” featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid, and gave Logic his first No. 1 entry on the Billboard 200 chart.

This now marks Bobby’s third gold album following the successes of his Under Pressure (2014) and The Incredible True Story (2015).

“I wanted to tell the stories of other people who may not have the voice I do,” Logic told Billboard of the album. “I felt the necessity to discuss these things, because I am proud to be me, I am proud of where I come from, and at the same time, it’s also bigger than me.”

In a special episode of Montreality, the Canadian outlet has put out a previously unseen snippet from an interview conducted with members of the Wu-Tang Clan back in June.

This time around, we get a glimpse into their debate on who will come out as the victor in the Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor fight set to take place Saturday night (August 26) in Las vegas’s T-Mobile Arena.

“I think a boxing punch is different from a martial arts punch,” says RZA. “Floyd should definitely be prepared for the power of a martial artist.”

“A martial artist has a snapping punch with a little bit of extra Chi. Wu-Tang is rooting for you, but don’t take McGregor lightly man. Don’t let him walk away with that.”

Watch the video in full as the collective hashes it out.

In the wake of the violent Charlottesville rally that left one dead, and multiple others injured, the Univerity of Texas at Austin has made the immediate decision to remove four statues of individuals with Confederate ties from the campus’ South Mall.

Bronze statues of Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Albert Sidney Johnston and Confederate Postmaster John H. Reagan will be relocated to the university’s Briscoe Center for American History, while the likeness of James Stephen Hogg, Texas’ first native-born governor and the son of a Confederate general, will be re-installation at another campus site, said university President Gregory L. Fenves

“The horrific displays of hatred at the University of Virginia and in Charlottesville shocked and saddened the nation,” Fenves said in a statement issued to the university community. “These events make it clear, now more than ever, that Confederate monuments have become symbols of modern white supremacy and neo-Nazism.”

According to University of Texas spokesman Gary Susswein, the removals were carried out abruptly in the middle of the night and without any advanced notifcation to the general public for regard of public safety, likely to avoid the presence of those protesting the removals and counter-protestors.

“The historical and cultural significance of the Confederate statues on our campus — and the connections that individuals have with them — are severely compromised by what they symbolize,” Fenves further explained. “Erected during the period of Jim Crow laws and segregation, the statues represent the subjugation of African Americans. That remains true today for white supremacists who use them to symbolize hatred and bigotry.”

It was two years ago that Fenves made a similar move, removing the statue of President Jefferson Davis from the Main Mall and relocating it in the campus’ Briscoe center.

The statues of Lee, Johnston, Reagon, and Hogg were initially left untouched because of their deeper significance in the state of Texas, but following the Charlottesville attack and subsequent counter-protests that have taken place throughout the country, he’s decided to take a stand.

“The University of Texas at Austin has a duty to preserve and study history,” he added. “But our duty also compels us to acknowledge that those parts of our history that run counter to the university’s core values, the values of our state and the enduring values of our nation do not belong on pedestals in the heart of the Forty Acres.”

It was last week that a “Unite The Right” white nationalist rally took place in Charlottesville, Virginia in protest of the removal of a Confederate statue in the city’s Emancipation Park.

This group, however, was met with a swarm of counterprotestors, leading to violent clashes all day and an eventual state of emergency was declared by Virginia governor Terry Macauliffe.

Things took a deadly turn when James A. Fields Jr. drove his car into a crowd of counterprotestors and killed 32-year old Heather Heyer and injured at least 19 others.

Currently, Fields is facing various felony charges that include murder in the 2nd degree.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the Chicago-reared Saba on the solo tip.

We’re happy to report that the drought is over as he returns with his latest single “There You Go.”

Co-produced by Oakland’s own Daoud and Saba himself, “There You Go” is treated to a backdrop draped in jazz influences, making for a smooth and minimal beat that the rapper contrasts with an aggresive and rapid delivery.

The last we heard from the 23-year old came at the end of 2016 with his Bucket List release and a subsequent North American headlining tour last spring.

Saba’s recent musical silence arrived in tandem with the tragic murder of his cousin and fellow PIVOT artist DinnerWithJohn, born John Walt, back in February of this year.

His next move will be to hold a ‘John Walt Day’ benefit concert on November 25th and launch the John Walt Foundation with the objective of providing opportunities for young artists in Chicago.

It was Saturday night that Bruno Mars brought his 24k Magic show to a sold out crowd in Michigan at the Palace of Auburn Hills, and by the time the show was over the multi-instrumentalist and singer pledged a donation of $1 million to the Flint water crisis.

“I’m very thankful to the Michigan audience for joining me in supporting this cause. Ongoing challenges remain years later for Flint residents, and it’s important that we don’t forget our brothers and sisters affected by this disaster,” Bruno said. “As people, especially as Americans, we need to stand together to make sure something like this never happens in any community ever again.”

It was back in 2014 that the city of Flint, Michigan switched its water sources to a pipeline connecting to the Flint River in an effort to reduce costs. The river water was later determined to contain high concentrations of  bacteria, disinfectant and lead, boasting a now infamously brown and murky color.

This eventually lead to an outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease, killing at least a dozen citizens.

Mars, who also just dropped off his “Versace On the Floor” music video starring Zendaya, announced that his donation would be going toward the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.

His effort is matched by a host of celebrities who have pledged financial support to helping the city restore potable running water for its residents. The likes of who include, but are certainly not limited to Dave Chapelle, Big Sean, and Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Since 2014, 5 state officials have been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection to the deaths that occured as a direct effect of Flint’s water crisis.

However it remains that the city of Flint, Michigan has not had clean water in over 1,200 days.

DMX has avoided jail time and has instead been placed under house arrest in the wake of a handful of violations.

TMZ reports that X reportedly showed up 30  minutes lates to his bail bond hearing in New York following his indictment on tax evasion charges.

The stipulations of the rapper’s bail included the prohibition of drugs and staying in the state unless he obtained explicit permission from the court.

DMX, however, managed to fail four drug tests, testing positive for both marijuana and cocaine and also flew to St. Louis to take care of “family matters” as reported by the outlet.

While these encroachments could have given the judge more than enough grounds to put DMX behind bars, the rapper was instead greeted with benevolence by being placed on a very strict house arrest that TMZ says restricts X from even stepping outside to mow his own lawn.

It was back in July that the New York-reared emcee, born Earl Simmons, was arrested for allegedly owing the IRS over $1 million in back taxes, pleading not guilty to 14 counts.

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates an essential nugget of Hip-Hop history.

The backstory of August 11, 1973 is that it marks the day the legendary DJ Kool Herc invented the concept of the “break” during a back-to-school party he threw in New York City’s Bronx borough.

Instead of playing a record in full, Herc created a technique in which the instrumental–or “break”–could be played longer. As his friend Coke La Rock hyped up the crowd, and dancers took to the floor, Hip-Hop was born.

In a doodle that is the first of its kind, Google commemorates this special moment with an interactive tutorial that allows users to create some Hip-Hop magic of their own.

The doodle, designed by artist Cey Adams, is a fitting graffiti graphic that turns into an virtual turntable when the center is clicked.

Google recruits Hip-Hop culture icon Fab 5 Freddy, well-known as the host of Yo! MTV Raps, to break down the process of selecting records from a crate of some of Hip-Hop’s most definitve samples, and mastering the fader.

Users are tasked with accomplishing various goals that include scratching a record, playing two records in the same key, and pausing a record.

With each completed goal, you are gifted with Hip-Hop trivia that brings to light the efforts of the likes of Sylvia Robinson, CEO/Founder of Sugarhill Records, Grand Wizzard Theodore who popularized the art of scratching, and Sal Abbatiello, the owner of the Disco Fever club.

“Hip Hop has done exactly what its founders set out to do, whether wittingly or unwittingly,” writes Lyor Cohen, former head of Def Jam and Youtube’s Global Head of Music. “It placed an accessible culture, relatable to any marginalized group in the world, at the forefront of music. In that spirit, here’s to BILLIONS of people getting a brief reminder that ‘Yes, yes y’all! And it WON’T stop!'”
