Star and creator of the hit show Insecure, Issa Rae stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about her upcoming third season on HBO.

During the show, Rae reveals how she used to be afraid of upsetting people in the industry when she was still a newbie to the big screen until she was given some hardcore no-frills advice by some hard hitters in Hollywood.

“I tend to be afraid of upsetting people and that will get you no where
As a show runner and being in the industry—just as a woman. Once your labeled difficult your career is kind of over with and no one wants to work with you. I have a great group of women I talk to, People I admire like Shonda Rhimes, Ava Duvernay, Debbie Allen, Mara Brock…”

The advice I got from them is—‘Don’t be afraid to be a bitch.’

Since the birth of baby Kulture, Cardi B has been settling in as a new mother and getting adjusted to the changes — so much so that she made the decision to cancel her tour appearances with Bruno Mars. Although we’ve yet to see baby Kulture, Cardi took to Instagram Live while she Kulture was sleeping to update fans on all things to come from the Bronx native.

In a five minute Instagram Live segment, Cardi explained the release of her Fashion Nova collection being pushed back from fashion week in September to a new November release date due to the number of pieces actually being released. More specifically, there will be over 100 pieces inf the collection and an official Fashion Nova release party in which Cardi will perform alongside two other upcoming female rap acts.

As far as new music from Cardi, she expressed that there were about five songs that were supposed to be on Invasion of Privacy but unfortunately didn’t make the tracklist because they weren’t a perfect fit. She has since decided to put it on a new project that she is planning to release on September 1st, if and only she is able to complete about five more songs to make it a full project.

Before ending her Instagram Live segment she let fans in on the depths of her workload in which involve roughly six features for other artists, songs for herself, and even music videos to be released with her new music. We all know Cardi is a workaholic so in due time a wave of new Cardi music will be impacted the world again.

After getting a look last week at the recently relaunched Reebok Rapide silhouette, the global sportswear stalwart is rolling out the shoe with a full editorial campaign fronted by rising U.K. R&B star Mahalia.




Taking us to her native streets of East London for the lookbook, Mahalia looks straight up stunning with the ’90s runner to assist her swag. Although we’ve already saw the OG red/blue/grey color theme, this time around we’re introduced to an all-black version with white accents on the side panel vector logo, heel, inner lining and midsole. Even though the 20-year-old chanteuse was probably still in diapers (or the womb!) when this silhouette was enjoying its peak notoriety, her old-soul vocal talent matches the retro vibe of the Rapide to a tee.

New York rapper Princess Nokia has always expressed her love for the ‘90s style era aesthetic, as the clothing she rocks on the regular boasts the same relaxed and effortless energy that the influential decade is known in part for.

In her newest partnership that she took to social media to announce, the style rebel (known to her loved ones as Destiny Frasqueri) takes us down memory lane as the new face for Betsey Johnson’s Fall 2018 Campaign.

As a nostalgic symbol of pretty, punk and all-around fun — colorful designs for millennials everywhere! — Betsey’s larger-than-life fashion personality is bringing the essence and the signature energy of her namesake brand to a new group of consumers in this latest collection. “Betsey is a icon to many NYC club kids and fashion weirdos. The plaid, the dresses, the somersault at the end of every season’s show. Can’t tell me I’m not a fan, darling,” Princess Nokia shared in reflection of the designer’s impact and brand.

In the campaign, Princess Nokia is sporting a wide range of modern takes on classic Betsey Johnson pieces and design elements — plaid, tulle, fishnet stockings, pop art, leopard and bright, bold prints and colors. The looks featured are all styled to perfection to evoke the energy that the Betsey Johnson brand is known for. The collection is described as “everything you need to channel your inner rebel,” with the “Morphine” singer serving as the perfect choice to introduce the collection. Statement pieces of the new collection are the novelty statement bags, oversized jeweled pendants and clothing with tulle, lace and plaid. The overall vibe of the collection is definitely for a bold, vibrant, modern rocker chick.

With style influences like Aaliyah, Posh Spice and J. Lo, the Puerto Rican-American artist oozes ‘90s nostalgic style, making her a great fit as the face of this campaign.

The iconic Naomi Campbell will be honored by Essence during New York Fashion Week. Page Six reports the legendary model will be celebrated at the annual Street Style Festival that will take place at the Duggal Greenhouse in Brooklyn on September 9.

Additional honorees at the Street Style Festival include singer Kelis and fashion influencer Kellie Brown. Amanda Seales will be on hosting duties, while Teyana Taylor and Yemi Alade will be slated to perform.

Recently Campbell spoke about her desire to help young and rising fashion designers to have a place to showcase their work. “I want to do a platform because not everyone can go to these big fashion weeks around the world and put money into showing their product,” she mentioned as a panelist for Cannes Lions.

Campbell also received the fashion icon award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America earlier this summer.

LaQuan Smith, whose designs are favored by Cardi B, Beyonce, and Rihanna, is bringing his sexy garments to the mass market to dress millions of 20-somethings in a partnership with mega online retailer ASOS.

The announcement of this collaboration between the Queens, New York native and ASOS is a step forward for boosting the visibility of black designers in the fashion industry. Despite the undeniable black influence on pop culture and fashion, few African Americans—and their contributions—are consistently recognized in a major way for their efforts, especially in the fashion industry. Though the visibility of black creators and artists is rising and the black gaze in fashion is slowly being seen as valuable currently, much work still has to be done.

The ASOS x LaQuan Smith collaboration came about casually, with Lola Okuyiga, the then director of collaborations and special projects at ASOS, playing a key role. She approached Smith’s team with the opportunity after being a fan of the brand for years and expressed interest in working together.

The ASOS Design x LaQuan Smith collection will bring the stunning creations from Smith that showcases a luxurious nightlife aesthetic with hallmarks like plunging necklines, body-hugging silhouettes and high slits to a wider audience. The British retailer boasts reach of over 18 million active customers. “Customers can expect classic, sexy LaQuan Smith shapes—women’s, men’s, accessories, shoes and plus size—reworked for the global ASOS customer. There is something for everyone,” the designer had to say. “I’m just really excited because there are a lot of people out there, specifically young kids, who aspire to wear my clothes that can’t necessarily afford it. Items in this collection will sell for less than $300, a price in line with the majority of offerings on the ASOS site.

The ASOS x LaQuan Smith collection will be available on the ASOS website in October.

After all of the rumors swirling that Nike was working on a rainbow-soled Blazer with Virgil Abloh and the release of the latest Tech Pack drop, Nike Sportswear is back with a new collection called Nike Sport Pack.

The new collection from Nike fuses bold graphics, textiles, silhouettes and contemporary and signature design elements, offering a collection that is equal parts sporty and stylish. Sport Pack features mix-and-match separates, track pants, outerwear, dresses, t-shirts, sweatshirts, accessories and more. The pieces from Sport Pack allow the wearer to easily merge them into their wardrobe and express their personality. The line is designed to alter the boundaries of sport, ultimately delivering a new language of creative self-expressive.

“Nike Sport Pack is an entirely new collection that draws from the energy and emotion of sport, while providing a bold new expression for Nike. We are referencing our own history and heritage in a way that’s uniquely Nike. It goes back to that idea of cut-and-paste sensibility—taking things from different eras and different reference points and putting them together,” says Senior Design Director Ricky Hendry of the collection.

The campaign that introduced Nike Sport Pack boasts a youthful, fun, cool and free energy. Featuring stars like Sloane Stephens, Odell Beckham Jr., Mabel and many more, this campaign gives off a vibe that is both vintage and modern and trendy.

Nike Sport Pack is now available on the Nike website and in Nike Kickslounge stores in Greater China, with a global release following on August 16.

Anyone who has experienced the energy of an HBCU, whether at a tailgate, halftime show, an event or simply walking around campus, can attest to vibe being one that is unmatched.

The one undeniable quality that is present at the HBCUs in the U.S. is the amount of style and fashion sense displayed on-campus is like no other. When walking onto an HBCU campus, be ready for a fashionable spectacle of grand proportions. One is sure to see styles and fashions that are reminiscent of the places that tell students’ life stories and are the looks that influence global fashion trends.

Southern University and A&M College alumni Amechi Ugwu understood the importance of paying homage to the fashion contributions that come out of these institutions. His solution to preserving the legacy of HBCU fashion influences led to the birth of Torch Sportswear, an apparel brand whose “vintage collection of HBCU apparel and memorabilia that represents the diverse group of institutions across the country that have educated African American students for over 100 years.”

Torch Sportswear is the first e-commerce store to exclusively sell vintage HBCU apparel and accessories. The inventory includes colorful unisex sweatshirts, bomber jackets, graphic t-shirts, baseball hats, jerseys and pullovers that proudly display the logos of illustrious institutions like Alabama State, Southern University, Spelman, North Carolina A&T, Grambling, Howard, Florida A&M and more. The product pricing ranges from $50 to $400.

Ugwu decided to launch Torch Sportswear in 2012, during his junior year at Southern University. He felt such an immense amount of pride as an HBCU student who was carrying on the legacy of black scholars who were intellectually and sartorially gifted. He was also inspired by the style of his fellow classmates strutting across campus in dope looks, especially seeing how they would rock fashion pieces with vintage finds and school paraphernalia.

Looking good and stepping out in style is something that is engrained in the DNA of African Americans. An HBCU campus definitely boasts an aura of “When you step out, you better come correct!” Shoutout to Amechi Ugwu and Torch Sportswear on such a dope movement to keep the legacy of HBCU style going!

The relationship between sports and fashion is one that has strong ties, and the influence of sports in fashion (and vice versa) is one that continues to grow.

The iconic Italian label Kappa has managed to make its presence known with dynamic and unique ath-leisure offerings that have caught the attention of streetwear lovers from around the world and of influencers in music, fashion, and sports. Kappa’s distinctive “Omini” logo features a man and woman leaning against one another, representative of the equality and mutual support between men and women. The logo is now a recognizable symbol of style and quality. It has arguably been referred to as the European equivalent to the triple stripes from Adidas. That statement speaks to the impact the Kappa has on both the sports and fashion worlds.

Milan and F.C. Barcelona. The CEO of Kappa USA, Puneet Girdhar, defines Kappa as a “legend brand” in relation to heavy involvement and visibility in sports. With the amount of work they have put in, the moniker from the Girdhar is no misnomer.

Kappa’s S/S 2018 “BANDA” collection is the star of the editorial shot by Polina Vinogradova. The collection speaks to the essence of Kappa as a brand and showcases the bold branding that is prevalent in pieces influenced by streetwear.

The capsule collection features an array of t-shirts, track jackets, and oversized sweatpants, with the “Omini” logo subtly stealing the show throughout the editorial. The styling features everyday pieces and articles of clothing like denim, minimal jewelry, and cozy sneakers. The “BANDA” capsule presents a cool take on the much-loved tracksuits and separates that the Italian streetwear brand is known for.

News of Beyonce’s September takeover of Vogue, including the first Black cover photographer in the magazine’s history, rocked the Internet with anticipation but that wasn’t the only headline to grab attention from the fashion journalism staple. There were also rumors that fashion icon Anna Wintour was set to leave her post as Editor-in-Chief.

After the rumors ran rampant online for a couple of days, Condé Nast, owner of the publication, released a statement from their CEO, Bob Sauerberg:

“Anna Wintour is an incredibly talented and creative leader whose influence is beyond measure. She is integral to the future of our company’s transformation and has agreed to work with me indefinitely in her roles as @voguemagazine editor-in-chief and artistic director of Condé Nast.”

As the 20th anniversary of her groundbreaking debut embarks, opportunities proving the power of her impact continue to flow. Ms. Lauryn Hill is starring in her first ever fashion campaign with Woolrich Collection and has also designed a capsule collection for the American brand according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Titled “Woolrich: American Soul since 1830,” the collection will feature several designs that ever exclusively customized by the Miseducation singer that will debut in Woolrich stores and retailers throughout North America and Europe. The campaign seeks to feature musicians who are “at the very heart of American culture” and with Hill’s impact throughout the mid to late ’90s paving a crucial lane for Black women in American music, the alliance is surely proper. The “Doo Wop” singer has also contributed her vocals to the campaign, which will be featured amidst the ads.

Framework creative director Brian Phillips describes the chance to work with the Fugees singer/rapper as “important” and finds value in her artistic sight. “We chose Ms. Hill as the first collaborator for ‘Woolrich: American Soul since 1830’ because her music is one of the most important cultural exports from America in the last 30 years,” said Phillips in a statement. “Ms. Hill’s style, her creativity, and her words are lasting. She truly resonates with people of all ages, and this is a moment when all eyes are back on her.”
Ms. Hill has apparently been sewing for the past five years, so her ability to craft designs came with a degree of expertise. For the ad, she is rocking an outerwear piece where screen printed pieces of her album cover art styled in bold text and decked out ornaments.

“American soul music, to me, is a continuum, a tremendous legacy of tradition if you will that communicates love’s survival — through hardship, suppression and other challenges,” displays a Woolrich ad featuring Hill’s vocals.

Playboy is now gearing up to take a dive deeper into the fashion industry with the launch of the new line Playboy White Label. This line serves as the first independent clothing line for Playboy. The most recent sartorial offering from the magazine was a collection in collaboration with the California-based streetwear brand, The Hundreds that was released last month. This inaugural launch from Playboy White Label will be accompanied by another collaboration with Anti Social Social Club, just one of a number of collaborations that Playboy has planned for the year.

In this first stand-alone collection from Playboy, White Label features an assortment of hoodies, t-shirts, and pants that are all adorned with cool variations of the classic Playboy Bunny logo and theme.

Playboy released the lookbook for the White Label collection that showcases the overall tone that the collection is meant to evoke: cool, edgy, effortless, chill, a bit nostalgic and very on-trend with the current wave and appearance of streetwear. This collection is perfect for the woman with who possesses a quiet sex appeal, is an undeniable style chameleon, appreciates the essence of streetwear and is able to easily ooze an optimum amount of swag.

I could definitely see style stars like Aleali May or Teyana Taylor putting their unique spin on these pieces.

If you were a fan of Calvin Klein’s original underwear collection, you will love this latest offering from the brand in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation.

Andy Warhol was a visual artist and was the brain behind the pop art style that became widely popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Artists and designers reference his imagery and style of art even over three decades later.

For the latest capsule collection from their ongoing creative partnership, Calvin Klein and the Andy Warhol Foundation have released another wearable edition of the late photographer’s portraits. Calvin Klein also paid homage to Andy Warhol’s work with the “Self Portraits” collection that was released last month. This most recent release is the second edition of the Calvin Klein Underwear capsule, titled Andy Warhol: Exposures, ’77-’85—the first edition featured two provocative prints from Warhol’s film Kiss.

The Exposures edition features prints of the naked human body interpreted by the late American artist. The Polaroid shots he took that were stamped onto the pieces are shot in a very statuesque style, reminiscent of sculpture poses. The images are highlighted on crisp, white women’s and men’s t-shirts, tanks, trunks, boxer briefs, boy shorts, bikinis, and bralettes. The waistband of the bra and underwear is accented by a logo in muted gray featuring Calvin Klein’s and Andy Warhol’s names side-by-side.

This collection carries on the essence of fashion in the ‘90s era: minimalistic, crisp, redefining style and heavy with ath-leisure before it was a trend. Even though Warhol did not live through to that era, the reimagining of timeless, classic wardrobe essentials with the aesthetic from Calvin Klein is what makes this collection work.

Fashion-forward, sporty and cozy attire, affectionately known to the industry as ath-leisure, has proven to be a trend that is here to stay, especially among streetwear and fashion enthusiasts. FILA has definitely been on top of their game in the reviving of ath-leisure and are showing no signs of letting up anytime soon.

Coming off of a dope drop with Kinfolk for the summer, FILA is back with another collection for the fall/ winter season. FILA has shared their official lookbook and released the apparel for its Fall/ Winter 2018 Heritage collection, featuring cool spins on the brand’s iconic silhouettes for both the men’s and women’s collections. The assortment includes revived soccer styles, reimagined knitwear, detailing with graphics and hardware and reengineered staples.

The offering for women includes a selection of bodysuits, crop tops, dresses, tear-away garments, chill sets and relaxed separates and more. The outerwear items for women from the collection include bomber, long-line and puffer jackets. The standout piece among the range of women’s outerwear is a navy blue faux fur jacket, with the FILA logo ornamented on the back of the jacket in red and white.

The men’s offering includes garments with tear-away snaps, embroidery, archival graphics, and signature FILA elements like pinstripes, color-blocking and heritage hues.

The collection features a predominantly warm and earthy color palette, with pieces that offer a vibrant contrast of color that pulls the entire collection together seamlessly. FILA has managed to reimagine the vintage vibes of archival football apparel in this new collection, making the offering appealing to their contemporary audience. Fabrics in scuba, Sherpa and athletic stretch have been used all throughout the collection.

Back in April, The Weeknd dropped his My Dear Melancholy EP to the surprise of his fans worldwide. Fans have been looking for the oft-rumored second half of the EP and while that is yet to come, Abel does drop off merch associated with the project.

The My Dear Melancholy merch line is limited in availability, only online for 96 hours and features tees, long-sleeved shirts, and hoodies. The pieces are branded by “MDM” for the album and are available on TheWeeknd.com.

The Weeknd frequently releases various collections, his most recent were the 2018 Merch Release 002 and a collaboration bringing the XO brand to the Marvel world.

My Dear Melancholy was led by “Call Out My Name,” hit number one on the Billboard, reached 29 million streams in 24 hours and sold 169,000 album-equivalent units in its first week.

Black dollars make up a lot of money in the cosmetic industry. It’s only right that we acknowledge those who are striving to leave their mark on the industry.

Black-owned makeup line Pat McGrath Labs recently secured a $60 million deal from New York-based investment firm Eurazeo Brands, with beauty industry insiders speculating that its valuation has been raised to $1 billion and surpassing that of Kylie Jenner’s cosmetics company (valued at $800 million), according to a press release from the investment firm. 

“It has always been my dream to create an iconic beauty brand that goes beyond the usual limitations, that lives outside the parameters of what is expected. I am thrilled to be working with the unique and expert team at Eurazeo Brands,” said McGrath via the press release.

Founded by McGrath in 2016, Pat McGrath Labs quickly revolutionized modern beauty through its must-have, straight-from-the-runway makeup experience. In its early days, products such as Pat McGrath Labs’ brilliant Gold 001, which sold out in less than six minutes, captured the imagination and attention of the industry, making it one of the most talked-about beauty launches.

In the fall of 2017, Pat McGrath Labs debuted its core collection of makeup on patmcgrath.com and at select Sephora locations in North America. The highly anticipated launch generated incredible media attention and captivated consumers with some of the most unique and coveted makeup ever made available to the public. This fall will see the introduction of new product categories to complement the brand’s best-selling lipsticks, eyeliners, and eyeshadows.
