President Donald Trump says the NFL is “doing the right thing” with a policy banning kneeling during the national anthem.

Trump spoke to Fox & Friends in an interview airing Thursday. The policy forbids players from sitting or taking a knee on the field during the anthem but allows them to stay in the locker room. Any violations of the new rules would result in fines against teams.

Trump says he doesn’t “think people should be standing in locker rooms,” but he praised the plan overall.

He says,

“You have to stand proudly for the national anthem. Or you shouldn’t be playing, you shouldn’t be there, maybe you shouldn’t be in the country.”

Trump criticized players kneeling during the anthem during a rally last fall.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson confirmed that the team has accepted the invitation to visit the White House on June 5.

As for who will attend, that’s an individual decision, Pederson said.

“Excited to be going, to be honored as world champions. I think it’s a great honor,” Pederson said Tuesday before the Eagles held their first spring practice.

“We’re still working through some logistics right now, so we don’t have all the details of the date. Excited to be going. It’s an individual basis [on players deciding to go or not]. It’s one of those things where we’re working through a ton of things. At the same time, it’s an individual decision.”

Some players, most notably safety Malcolm Jenkins and defensive end Chris Long, have already said they won’t go because of their feelings for President Trump.

Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, for one, said he would attend if that’s what the majority of the team wants.

Pederson said veteran running back Darren Sproles and defensive end Michael Bennett are the only two who aren’t showing up this week for OTAs, which are voluntary.

Sproles is recovering from ACL surgery last fall. He has often missed OTAs to work out on his own. Pederson said he’s not concerned about Bennett, who is in his first season with the Eagles. Bennett spent the past several seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

The UFC on Fox Sports era is coming to an end.

News reports said on Tuesday night that ESPN, which already snagged rights to up to 15 live UFC events per year on its new streaming service ESPN+, has also won the television rights package, which will bring an additional 15 fight cards to the network, making for 30 per year starting in 2019.

Sources familiar with negotiations say ESPN has struck a deal for a second portion to the package currently held by Fox Sports that will bring the total cost in the neighborhood of $300 million per year for five years, totaling $1.5 billion. The new deals, which cover a total of 30 fights, kick in early 2019.

Reps from ESPN, UFC and Fox Sports could not be reached for comment.

As with their other pact, the events covered under this deal will be split between ESPN’s linear channels and ESPN+, the new streaming service launched last month.

The article also noted that the UFC will still have pay-per-view events, as well as the UFC Fight Pass streaming service, even though live fight cards will be shown on ESPN+. It is not known at this point how many PPVs the UFC will run moving forward under the new deal, but if there’s no reduction then you’re still looking at more than 40+ fight cards per year.

This comes on the heels of news that Fox will broadcast WWE’s SmackDown on a 5-year, $1 billion contract. Interestingly enough, The Hollywood Reporter noted at the time that “Fox is willing to pay about $175 million annually for the MMA promotion.” Perhaps that was a sign that Fox was ready to move on from the UFC.

It had been reported last year that Endeavor was looking for rights fees in the neighborhood of $450 million, then a Variety article from April said that they wanted somewhere in the $300-$400 million range. This puts them at the absolute lowest end of that total, but it’s still more than double what FOX is paying them right now, and it’s a landmark moment for the UFC to be with the self-proclaimed “Worldwide Leader in Sports,” and it opens the door for more mainstream coverage and more attention to the product than what they had with Fox Sports.

Throughout the NBA Playoffs, there was the debate on who deserved to be KIA NBA Rookie of the Year, with fans torn between the efforts of Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz and Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers. Both players are currently in their off-season but can celebrate the fact that they have been named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

The NBA revealed the honors today and the first team was rounded out by Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, who joins the aforementioned two as Rookie of the Year finalists, Los Angeles Laker Kyle Kuzma, and Chicago Bull Lauri Markkanen.

The All-Rookie second team is headlined by the most famous of all the rookies, Laker Lonzo Ball and is joined in the backcourt by highflying Dallas Maverick Dennis Smith Jr. The frontcourt is occupied by John Collins, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Josh Jackson of the Atlanta Hawks, Sacramento Kings, and Phoenix Suns, respectively.

The announcement of the Rookie of the Year will come after the NBA Finals on June 25, but be on the lookout for more honors to wrap up another busy NBA Season to drop periodically across the duration of the NBA Playoffs.

We are in full swing for baseball season but superstar Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano won’t take any swings from the batter’s box in the forthcoming weeks. The baseball all-star has been suspended 80 games without pay by Major League Baseball after testing positive for a banned substance.

ESPN reports the Tuesday (May 15) announcement shared Cano test positive for Furosemide. The substance, which is also diuretic, is in violation of the drug prevention and treatment program of the MLB.

In response to the news of the suspension, Cano issued a statement on social media where he accepts responsibility for the use of Furosemide, however, he states that he was unaware that the substance was banned and stands firm on the fact that it is not one of Performance Enhancement. Cano shares Furosemide was provided by a licensed doctor from the Dominican Republic and his usage was to treat a medical ailment.

If the 80 games weren’t enough to crush the star’s spirits he will encounter a loss of $11.85 million of this year’s contract. In addition to losing money, if his Mariners were to make it to the MLB Postseason he would have to watch instead of assisting his teammates to try and win the championship.

“I apologize to my family, friends, fans, teammates and the Mariners organization,” Cano stated. “I am extremely grateful for the support I have received during this process, and I look forward to rejoining my teammates later this season.”

The full statement from the Roc Nation represented slugger is available below.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday paved the way for states to legalize sports gambling, striking down a 1992 federal law that barred it in most places and setting off a rush by businesses and states to cash in on an expected multibillion-dollar jackpot.

The justices endorsed New Jersey’s bid to allow such wagering in a ruling that ushers in a new era for the leading U.S. sports leagues, which had sued to block the state’s sports gambling law and called such betting a threat to the integrity of competition, fearing game-fixing and other types of cheating.

In a ruling that sent shares in gaming companies and casinos soaring, the court voided the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act and upheld the legality of a 2014 state law permitting sports betting at New Jersey casinos and horse racetracks.

Some states see sports betting, like lotteries, as a potentially lucrative source of tax revenue. The American Gaming Association estimates there is currently a $150 billion-a-year illegal sports-betting market.

The ruling takes the United States a step closer to legal sports betting in numerous states, perhaps nationwide, rather than just in select places such as Nevada, home to the gambling capital Las Vegas. The 1992 law had effectively prohibited sports gambling in all states except Nevada and, to a limited extent, Delaware, Montana and Oregon.

“New Jersey has long been the lead advocate in fighting this inherently unequal law, and today’s ruling will finally allow for authorized facilities in New Jersey to take the same bets that are legal in other states in our country,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat, said in a statement.

The ruling adds to a decades-long trend of decreased restrictions on various types of gambling in the United States.

In just his 12th professional bout, two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasiliy Lomachenko (11-1, 9 KOs) won his third world title in as many weight classes. He’s now the fastest boxer in history to accomplish that feat by stopping a determined Jorge Linares (44-4) in the 10th round of a thrilling lightweight title bout.

Lomachenko broke the record held by Australian legend Jeff Fenech, a Hall of Famer who won world titles at bantamweight and junior featherweight before winning a belt at featherweight in his 20th fight in 1988.

Lomachenko had to come off the canvas himself, as Linares dropped him late in the sixth round with a beautiful right hand that found Lomachenko making a rare mistake of overconfidence. He stepped into a perfect rocket and finding himself on his seat as a result.

Lomachenko, though, proved there’s more than just pure dominance to his game, as he came back from that well and stopped Linares from developing any major rhythm. However, Linares did put up a good fight and gave Lomachenko a real contest for the first time in a while.

What the Ukranian boxer does next is up in the air. There’s money in a fight with Mikey Garcia at the 135 lebel, but it seems Garcia is busy in Julyit appears.

Either way, Lomachenko’s claim to being the pound-for-pound the best boxer today is a legit claim.

After an amazing 2017-2018 season, New Orleans Saints Running Back Mark Ingram has reportedly been using performance enhancing drugs or PED’s. The former Heisman Trophy winner has been suspended for 4 games next season for the league violation.

This suspension is a major blow to Ingram who is seeking a new contract this year. Ingram posted his best rushing numbers of his 8 year career earning his second 1,000 rushing yard season as a Saint adding 12 touchdowns and 416 receiving yards.

According to ESPN, Ingram will miss out on nearly $1 million because of the suspension, including bonus money, with his return date scheduled for an October 8 meeting with the Washington Redskins.

In the mean time, Pro-Bowl rookie Running Back Alvin Kamara will take control of lead back duties in Ingram’s absence. Kamara impressed many in his debut season with 728 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns helping the Drew Brees led Saints to an NFC South division title.

Ingram and Kamara were the one-two punch that complimented future Hall of Famer Drew Brees, and Saints fans will find out in the first four weeks how effective that team is with out their “1-A” running back. If Kamara can hold down the fort in the first month, Ingram could be looking for a new home in the near future.

The Drake and Kendrick Perkins beef extended to after Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals series between the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday.

The rapper and Cavs center got into it during halftime of Tuesday’s game in Toronto, with Perkins being restrained by JR Smith. There were more words exchanged after Perkins’ Cavs pulled out a 113-112 overtime win.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin shared this video from after the game. Drake appears to be saying that he “didn’t say” whatever Perkins thought he did.

Drake, who is from Toronto, is an ambassador for the Raptors and is often in attendance for their games, sometimes mixing things up with opposing players. Perkins was added to Cleveland’s roster late in the regular season but has not played in any postseason games yet, which explains why he was wearing the suit.

The Cavs added Perkins to serve as their muscle and to bring veteran leadership. He certainly is acting as the muscle with Drake.

Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley may be the most dominant personalities in sports, but they also were a dominant on the court during their playing days.

The two even gotten into a fight on the court November 10, 1999.

During a play, Shaq bumped Chuck on the head. Barkley swung an elbow, with Shaq pushing him back.

Barkley threw a basketball in Shaq’s face, in retaliation, with Shaq throwing a punch in retaliation.

Both players were ejected from the game.

“I also didn’t think that was going to turn into a fight,” Charles Barkley said on a recent episode of the Scoop B Radio Podcast.

“But first of of all, it was an NBA fight, so we fought like girls and it didn’t last very long.”

The Lakers won the game 89-88. Glen Rice led all Lakers players with 24 points and the Rockets’ Steve Francis had 24 points and 10 rebounds in the Houston loss.

“He was doing all that wild monkey [stuff], throwing [elbows], acting crazy,” O’Neal said back then.

“I think that was a tactic to get me out of the game, and it worked. I’ll probably have to be a little smarter next time, just wait to get him back later.”

Years later, Barkley says he had his pride to play for. “I wasn’t going to let him embarrass me in front of 18,000 people, so you have to fight at some point,” he told me.

“But I’m glad nobody got hurt because he’s a great friend and I enjoy working with him.”

The NBA is a progressive league, but it can only go as far as its leadership.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver reiterated Friday the league believes it should receive compensation if sports betting becomes legal in the United States.

Silver explained his stance during an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up!

“We’ve joined the fray … and we have a position,” he said. “We think we should be compensated in certain ways for the additional costs we’re going to incur through various integrity measures.”

With the possibility of funneling hundreds of billions of dollars in illegal betting into state-sanctioned sports books, Silver foresees an increase in the cost of doing business for the NBA.

The NBA and Major League Baseball have collaborated on lobbying efforts to state legislatures. Legal Sports Report obtained the leagues’ one-page summary document that carried the headline, “Protecting the integrity of sports in a regulated sports betting market,” emphasizing that leagues “should be compensated for their investments, risks and integrity expenses.” As a result, the leagues are seeking a one percent integrity fee as a royalty.

Sports beating is big business in Las Vegas. If indeed it goes nationwide the amount of money it will generate could be enormous. People gamble behind closed doors all the time.  Silver and the NBA just wants their cut. If executed correctly, this could be a win-win for everyone and a much needed boost to the country’s economy.

Recently released Dallas wide receiver Dez Bryant may not be unemployed for long. Though the 29-year-old has seen his numbers decline over the last few seasons, he is still garnering interest from a number of teams around the league, teams hungry for the red-zone presence the 6’2, 220-pound Bryantcan provide.

If this were 2014, Bryant would be the hottest commodity on the market (and Dallas wouldn’t have let him go in the first place). Back then, Bryant was a top-five WR in the NFL, coming off an 88-catch, 16-touchdown, 1300-yard season.

But injuries and age started to take their toll. The downward trend continued the last two seasons, even though Dallas’ QB situation improved with the arrival of Dak Prescott. Bryant’s time as a true #1 wideout had come to an end.

Given that Dez was going to cost the Cowboys $16 million against the salary cap, the team understandably elected to move on, cutting him last week. But just because he isn’t worth $16 million doesn’t mean he’s valueless.

Initial reports suggested the Bills, Packers, and Ravens were all in the market for a receiver with Bryant’s skillset. Bryant, himself, has stated that he would like to sign with another NFC East team, so he has the chance to play the franchise that cut him twice a year. But the most likely landing spot at this time appears to be Baltimore.

According to NFL.com’s Chris Wessling, the Ravens have “shown the most interest in Bryant since he was released.” Baltimore’s offense — in particular its passing game — has floundered of late, finishing fourth-last in the league in yards per game in 2017. While some of that is due to Joe Flacco’s regression as a passer, it’s also thanks to a receiving corps largely devoid of playmakers.

Baltimore already signed former 49er and Raider Michael Crabtree this offseason to remedy the situation, and evidently, are not done making moves.

Baltimore could be a desirable landing spot for Bryant, who recently extoled the New York Giants’ defense in an interview with 247sports. The Ravens’ D is Super Bowl-ready. Even paired with an anemic offense, the team has not-so-far-fetched 33/1 odds to win the Lombardi Trophy (odds pulled from this NFL 2018-19 betting guide). If John Harbaugh can create any semblance of a passing game, they will start to look like one of the more complete teams in the league.

There is a lingering question of fit, of course. Crabtree is not a speedster; Bryant is not a speedster; and Flacco’s relative strength is throwing the deep ball. Having that pair occupy two of Baltimore’s receiver spots may not put Flacco in the best position to succeed.

That said, when your second-leading receiver was a 37-year-old Ben Watson who barely cracked 500 yards, modest improvement shouldn’t be hard to come by.

While Colin Kaepernick is being blackballed out the NFL, Reuben Foster seems to be able to keep a job in the mist of felony charges.

The San Francisco 49ers’ linebacker appeared in court Thursday charged with multiple felonies on allegations he “dragged” his live-in girlfriend “by her hair, physically threw her out of the house, and punched her in the head 8 to 10 times,” rupturing her eardrum.

If convicted, Foster could face more than 11 years in prison.

In a statement Thursday after the charges were announced, the 49ers did not mention any intention to cut Foster.

“The 49ers organization is aware of today’s disturbing charges regarding Reuben Foster,” the statement reads. “We will continue to follow this serious matter. Reuben is aware that his place in our organization is under great scrutiny and will depend on what is learned through the legal process.”

The 49ers drafted Foster in the first round last year despite questions about character issues that had some teams reportedly taking him off their draft boards.

Foster will also be subject to league discipline, with the NFL conducting its own investigation that could find him in violation of the league’s personal conduct policy even if he is acquitted.

As the NBA regular season comes to an end, The New York Knicks are already looking in a new direction as head coach Jeff Hornacek was fired early Thursday morning. Following his return to New York after a 110-98 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers last night, James Dolan and the Knicks organization informed the former Utah Jazz shooting guard that he will not be returning for the last year that was on his contract according to a report by ESPN.

Some early head coaching options for the Knicks according to ESPN’s league sources are Former Grizzlies coach David Fizdale, former Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt and former Golden State Warriors Head Coach and former Knicks Point Guard Mark Jackson.

Jackson seems to be the early favorite for Knicks fans as a former star player for the team as well as coaching the Golden State Warriors team that would win the NBA Finals one year after his departure. Jackson was largely responsible for the success of the team and was inexplicably let go after a 50 win season with the then up-and-coming roster.

Since taking over as head coach two seasons ago, Hornacek won 60 games and lost 104 which is good for sixth worst over that stretch according to ESPN. The Knicks finished this season 29-53, good for 11th place in the Eastern Conference. More front office changes are expected from the Knicks during this offseason as the franchise has struggled to put the pieces together to make the playoffs.

The Knicks were without star center Kristaps Porzingis for a lot of the season after he tore his ACL in early February which led to a string of losses.

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Trevor Davis was arrested at LAX on Sunday morning after cops say he joked about smuggling a bomb into the airport, according to media reports.

On a trip to Hawaii with a female companion, the Packers’ 5th round draft pick was at the ticket counter at Hawaiian Airlines being screened with the usual security questions about his luggage when Davis turned to his companion and asked,

“Did you remember to pack the explosives?”

Unsure if he was joking or not(and rightfully so under the climate of terrorism in today’s society), the flight attendant called the police. Even though Davis said he was just kidding, he was immediately arrested and booked on misdemeanor charges of making terroristic threats.

Davis was immediately released.

Charlotte Hornets Point Guard, Kemba Walker, has claimed the top spot as the franchise’s all-time leading scorer with 9,841 career points. At home versus the Cleveland Cavaliers, The career long Hornet scored his record breaking bucket on a contested reverse layup with 20 seconds left in the game. Despite the achievement, the Hornets loss to the LeBron led Cavaliers 118-105. Walker finished the game with 21 points shooting 7-18 from the field and 5-5 from the free throw line.

Walker took over the position previously held by Dell Curry, the father of Golden State Warriors star player Steph Curry. The retired Curry works as a game announcer for Charlotte and was present to see his team record broken in the final seconds of regulation. Following the game, LeBron James embraced the Uconn Alumnus and congratulated him on his feat.

“I’m not supposed to be here” The Buzz City Point Guard said before his voice drowns in a sea of applause during his post game interview. “A lot of people from where I’m from don’t make it… this is a huge accomplishment.”

As happy as he was to reach have this achievement on his resume, the ever competitive athlete wishes it could’ve came with a win attached to it.

Hornets Chairman and NBA legend, Michael Jordan, made a statement in regard to his starting guard. “…it’s a testament to his hard work, dedication and passion for the game of basketball,” Jordan said. “He exemplifies what it means to be a Hornet.”

Walker is currently in his 7th season in the NBA and his been with the Hornets since draft day. Back in January before the trade deadline, there were reports that the Hornets were ready to entertain trades for their star point guard but nothing came into fruition.

Making $12 million this season on a Charlotte team that has been below average his whole career, it could be time for the 27-year-old to make a change. Walker is currently under contract for one more season with the team before he can explore other options.

NCAA March Madness began recently! Did your brackets survive?

While we’re on the topic of hoops, Wally Szczerbiak, a studio analyst during the tournament was a standout during his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves and at the University of Miami- Ohio.

Wally World’s NBA career and social career once collided when he got a shoutout from Jamie Foxx on the hit WB show, The Jamie Foxx Show courtesy of Kevin Garnett.

KG then in his first stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves was in town and was staying as a guest at the King’s Tower.

The funniest scene of that episode was when Jamie was wearing a Timberwolves jersey that was not KG’s and Garnett pointed it out. Jamie indicated that the store ran out of KG’s #21 jerseys, but had a whole lot of Wally Szczerbiak jerseys.

Just one problem: Jamie and KG couldn’t pronounce Wally’s last name, which phonetically is read: ‘SIR-BE-AK’

“If social media was alive back then my computers would have been blowing up,” Wally Szczerbiak told Scoop B Radio’s Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson. “I remember when that happened. That was a great moment.

“I had some great years with Kevin Garnett, we had our ups and downs. But in the end, everything worked out well. That was a pretty funny scene though one that I will always remember and always go back to YouTube and watch.”

The Minnesota Timberwolves have something to cheer about this season. They’ll likely go to the NBA Playoffs thanks to the play of Karl Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins and other key contributors. Szczerbiak been dialed in is paying attention. “I always root for the Timberwolves and it breaks my heart that ever since KG and I left they haven’t made the playoffs,” he said.

“The future is bright for them.”
