August 25 will never be an easy day for many music fans across the world, particularly for those who love the late R&B icon Aaliyah Dana Haughton.

Since 2001, this day has marked the anniversary since our beloved Princess of R&B and Queen of Urban Pop was killed in a plane crash after filming the music video for “Rock the Boat” off her perfect self-titled album, Aaliyah. The serenity of the beat paired with her light-as-a-feather vocals, even with its suggestively coy lyrics, have stood the test of time as one of the most beautiful R&B videos of all time, while also being one of the most heartbreaking as well.

Granted, she was a beast on the soul tip, but Baby Girl was also one of the premiere R&B divas who had no problem riding a Hip-Hop beat with syncopated bliss. Much like her ’90s predecessors Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey, Aaliyah brought out the softer side of the street and could hold her own next to some of the hardest rappers during her era of reign. So, while we’ll always remember her for being a soul siren with the voice of an angel, The Source decided to take the 18th anniversary of Aaliyah’s untimely passing to give you all 25 of her illest rap collabs and remixes.

From making sure DMX made it back in one piece, to getting a fresh-out-of-jail Slick Rick on a Marvin Gaye cover, let’s look back at Aaliyah as a Hip-Hop star:

Hot like fire: Aaliyah (circa 1997) recording the “Night Riders” remix with Boot Camp Clik members Tek & Steele of Smif-N-Wessun and Buckshot.

25. “If Your Girl Only Knew” (The New Remix) [featuring Missy Elliott]

A good argument for why it made perfect sense in the ’90s to buy both the album and single releases. This ‘Missy mix’ of Aaliyah’s chart-topping 1996 hit record absolutely slaps.

24. “At Your Best (You Are Love)” (Stepper’s Ball Remix) [feat. R. Kelly]

It’s a bit tough to get through the Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number era without mentioning R. Kelly, given all that’s come to light this year, but it just doesn’t make sense to ignore Aaliyah’s musical legacy from her beginning years in order to #MuteRKelly. Some songs, like this deep cut remix, prove that she’s so much greater than the producer behind and on the record.

23. “Man Undercover” – Timbaland and Magoo (feat. Aaliyah)

Silky and smooth vocals from the queen, paired with a few bars by Timbo to give the hard-hitting beat a proper rap component. This was always a sweet spot for the “Timbaliyah” duo.

22. “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number” (Linslee Remix) [featuring Cash Rex]

Here’s a G-funk remix by British producer Linslee Campbell that most fans have probably never even heard. Yeah, you’re welcome!

21. “Enough Said” (featuring Drake)

Yep, we took it there! As the sole posthumously-released collaboration on this list, we had to show “Enough Said” and Drizzy some love for keeping Baby Girl’s legacy alive over a decade after her death.

20. “John Blaze” (featuring Missy Elliott)

When Missy and Aaliyah jumped on a track together, it always resulted in a smooth banger. This cut off Timbaland’s 1998 album Tim’s Bio: Life from da Bassment proved to be no different.

19. “Girlfriends” – Yaushameen Michael (feat. Aaliyah)

This unreleased collab has reached almost mythical status. Even though most people have no idea who Yaushameen Michael is — she was a minor member of the Bassment Crew that even landed a feature on Tim’s Bio: Life from da Bassment (1998) — it didn’t stop Aaliyah from getting on a record with the unsung femcee. “Girlfriends” was originally recorded for Aaliyah’s 2001 self-titled album as a way for her to officially introduce the world to Yaushameen. Due to many circumstances, the ultimate one being Aaliyah’s passing, this collab never saw the light of day until it leaked back in 2006.

18. “Back and Forth” (featuring R. Kelly)

Nothing beats the first time! On her debut single, which topped the R&B chart and peaked at no. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, Aaliyah proved from the beginning that she was a b-girl at heart.

17. “Are You Feelin’ Me” (featuring Timbaland)

One of the hardest tracks off the Romeo Must Die soundtrack, “Are You Feelin’ Me” is still a peak Aaliyah/Timbaland era beat. This one just further solidifies the void in pop music we’ve been feeling for the past 18 years that only these two could fill.

16. “I Need You Tonight” – Junior M.A.F.I.A. (featuring Aaliyah)

Young Liyah with a baby-faced Kim and the Junior M.A.F.I.A. crew, who were also more than likely teenagers at the time. Young Nation, indeed!

15. “Hot Like Fire” (Feel My Horns Mix) [featuring Timbaland & Missy Elliott]

Aaliyah, Missy and Timbaland. Need we say more? Definitely blast this one at high volume!

14. “Try Again” (Timbaland Remix) [featuring Sabastian And Sin]

Even though Aaliyah’s vocals are carried over from the original Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song, and the bars by Sabastian And Sin are a bit forgettable, Timbaland’s added extensions to the beat toward the beginning and end make up for the lyrical shortcomings.

13. “Down With The Clique” (feat. Tia “Second Chapter” Hawkins)

While the circumstances behind Tia Hawkins’ story are heartbreaking in itself to say the least, reflecting back on the good times will always soften the blow of hard times and tribulations. Her work as a rapper on “Down With The Clique,” in addition to many other songs on the Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number album, make for worthy recognition in a positive light. Wherever you are, we’re praying for you Tia!

12. “Ladies In Da House” (featuring Missy Elliott & Timbaland)

One of the chillest deep cuts off Aaliyah’s classic 1996 album One In a Million. Definitely something that both the ladies and fellas in the house can always groove to.

11. “Queen Bitch” – Lil’ Kim (featuring Aaliyah & The Notorious B.I.G.)

Even though Aaliyah and Biggie make light contributions to this Hard Core standout, it’s still dope to think that Kim had two music icons on a radio remix for the streets. Respect to the Queen!

10. “A Girl Like You” (featuring Treach)

The back-and-forth flow between these two made for a super fun record overall. Also, the fact that fellow Naughty By Nature member Kay-Gee produced this One In a Million album cut is an added bonus.

9. “Live and Die for Hip Hop” – Kris Kross (featuring Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri, Mr. Black, and Aaliyah)

Aaliyah is so silky on this record, even though she’s simply cooing on the chorus. This record will always make us wonder how she would’ve fit into the So So Def family if things had played out differently.

8. “We Need a Resolution” (featuring Timbaland)

Looking back, this song was the literal example of the term “ahead of its time.” It barely made a blip on the Hot 100 back in 2001 — it peaked at no. 59 — but “We Need a Resolution” would’ve been a surefire hit had it been released in today’s more experimental musical climate.

7. “Got To Give It Up” (featuring Slick Rick)

What’s interesting about this collaboration is that Slick Rick recorded this while on work release from prison, in addition to Aaliyah being brave enough to cover a ’70s soul classic with satisfying results. Now that’s gangsta!

6. “Stickin’ Chickens” – Missy Elliott (featuring Aaliyah and Da Brat)

The ultimate female empowerment record, done effortlessly by three Hip-Hop queens of the ’90s. There’s nothing better than hearing the union between women who rock with each other both on and off wax.

5. “Up Jumps da Boogie” – Timbaland & Magoo (featuring Missy Elliott and Aaliyah)

What a tune! As posse records go, this was an apex moment for the Bassment Crew. Everyone played their part perfectly, and the music video is still a great look at one of the best musical families to ever do it.

4. “Night Riders (9th Wonder Remix)” – Boot Camp Clik (featuring Aaliyah)

While Buckshot & Boogie Brown’s original remix for Boot Camp Clik’s 1997 album For the People was fire in itself, 9th Wonder absolutely laced this version. Aaliyah of course is as smooth as ever, proving yet again that she can hold her own with the hardest MCs.

3. “You Won’t See Me Tonight”- Nas (featuring Aaliyah)

We still can’t believe this song didn’t get an official release with a proper music video! The God Nasir and the Queen Aaliyah make for a dream team on this I Am… standout cut, produced by none other than Timbo the King.

2. “Come Back In One Piece” (featuring DMX)

When considering joint albums by the likes of Jhené Aiko and Big Sean (Twenty88), or a more accurate comparison like The Carters themselves Jay-Z and Beyoncé, DMX and Aaliyah would’ve made a pretty solid collaborative LP had fate given us more time with Baby Girl. Given this classic cut off the soundtrack for Romeo Must Die, the 2000 film which stars both musicians, we can only assume that it would’ve been a definite hit.

1. “Are You That Somebody?” (Supafriendz Remix) [featuring Danja Mowf, Mad Skillz & Lonnie B.]

One of Aaliyah’s greatest rap moments ever was this massive remix to her even more massive 1998 hit record off the Dr. Doolittle soundtrack. The streets couldn’t get enough of this version, and Timbaland’s insanely iconic beat didn’t even need to be touched. Simply put, there will never be a singer that meshes so well with Hip-Hop quite like this dearly missed R&B queen.

Rest in peace forever, Aaliyah! Let us know how you’re remembering the dearly missed R&B icon today by letting us know over on our Facebook and Twitter!

Everyone seems to be dropping their Top 5 Rappers of All Time list all over the place. So it should come to no surprise that Joseph Sikora aka Tommy from 50 Cent’s hit television drama, Power, has one too. What will surprise you is who falls on the Chicago Gen Xer’s list.

There were rules to the game though. You could not say the usual suspects: No JAY-Z, BIGGIE, TUPAC, RAKIM, EMINEM, or KRS1.

READ MORE: SOURCE360 RECAP: Joseph Sikora, Eden Duncan-Smith and Stefon Bristol Get Real About Hollywood On The ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ Panel

But he was not frazzled at all. He was able to drop his top 5 with no hesitation and conviction. Check out oh Joey Boy giving it to us really real… And of course, he got 50 up in his list.

Here is his list.

1. Q-Tip from Tribe Called Quest

2. Jeru the Damaja

3.  Ol’ Dirty Bastard (or any of the Wu Tang Clan)

4. 50 Cent

5. Parrish from EPMD

Seems like Joseph knows his classic Hip-Hop. No wonder Tommy is our favorite character on the show… he our type of people.

Every year, SOURCE360 canvasses Hollywood is search of the biggest and brightest stars in the industry to venture into Brooklyn to talk about the business. In past, we’ve had big Hip-Hop film producers such as Master P and Roxanne Shanté, network executives such as Debra Lee and Thembisa Mshaka and big screen directors like Bennie Boom.

This year was no exception.

As the new season of Power approaches, SOURCE360 secured break-out star Joseph Sikora (also known as Tommy Egan) to talk to the ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ audience about his career. Also on the panel, fresh off their Netflix summer blockbuster was lead actor Eden Duncan-Smith and director Stefon Bristol.  Africa Miranda from The Africa Miranda Show on Facebook moderated the panel.

Here are a few jewels that we took away from this most informative panel:

ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Sikora doesn’t use social media to be political.

The Ozark star stated that he does not address social issues of social media because for him as a white man in this business:

“I don’t use it as a political platform. It is too dangerous for me, especially as a white man. Its too slippery of a slope. If you want to see my social media, you will get to know me the man behind the character. That is mainly what I use it for.”

He continues, “I am mainly accessible on Twitter.” He does however, re-post DL Hughley and his commentary on the world. Even with that, sometimes he gets backlash because of that. So to play it safe, he just spreads his love and humor on social.

Bristol also understands that social media can be a headache. He flatly stated:

“I can’t wait until the day I can delete my social media.”

His co-panelists cracked up.

“It’s fun, but I use it because I need to promote… showing people what I am doing… keeping people in anticipation…. it is distracting… I hate it but I do it because I see people asking me questions like how do I get in and what advice can I give them. And I answer because I was once in their position. But I hate it.” He did add that it is helpful to build your audience and to inform people of the projects that you have done or are doing. Its a necessary evil.

Duncan-Smith shared that she mostly uses social media to inform the community about her passion projects. Currently she is publishing on Instagram information about the leading 26 democratic presidential candidates.

HOW TO DEAL WITH THE PRESSURE OF THE JOB

Duncan-Smith likes to be with friends and is a strong advocate for self care. She considers self care the little things such as taking a shower in the morning and eating breakfast. She also believes that drinking water and teas can help mellow you out.

“You have to take care of yourself, more than anything because you are the most important person in your life. There is no one more important than you… no employer or employee more important. You need to take care of yourself. No matter what you do. I am in school and also working… and in those little moments when I have a break… I calm down and take a moment. Let yourself have the moment of peace and elation that keeps you driving forward.”

Bristol talked about the pressure of taking the next film.

“The pressure is on.”

He then talked about a scripted that he rejected about a mummy on a slave plantation. And while as a new director, you want to select another project, you can’t just take anything.

He also spoke about the wolves in sheep’s clothing out there, why having a close circle of friends is important for your mental health.

“I have two very close friends that I can go to cry to and they can come and cry to me. And I believe in Jesus.”

PROJECTS

Bristol stated that Spike Lee cursed him out for making a short film about two Black kids robbing a bodega store. He continued:

“I appreciate that because it forced me to really think about the stories that I want to tell. So I think that if I hadn’t asked him [Spike Lee] to be my mentor at Morehouse, going to NYU and having him berate me to make sure I create work that pushes the culture instead of taking a stab at it, I don’t think that See You Yesterday would have been made.”

Sikora also talked about taking just any project.

“Here is a good example. I am almost the same age as Michael Shannon. Michael Shannon and I both come from Chicago. I took every job that came my way. Michael Shannon was strategic. Whose doing better? Michael Shannon with his Academy Award nomination.”

He continued, “Also… I am learning. I was raised to be a worker. I was raised to work with my hands and have a 9 to 5 job… I just am so grateful to be here, and that drives producers and directors crazy. You got the job for a reason… you are good. I could not until recently, find my gravity. And that is important. It is important to have a plan. It is important to stick to your morals.”

Eden also chimed in.

“As a Black female actor, I have to be strategic on the things that I choose. There are a lot of auditions that come our way and they are basically the same. They are basically made to make fun of my demographic. I won’t allow myself to be humiliated on screen or on stage.”

She continued:

“If I don’t agree with what I just read, I will not go out to audition for it. I feel I am in a position to where I telling other Black female stories and if that if that story is being told in a skewed way where it shows a negative side of Black female culture or tries to suppress us or demean us in any way… I can’t bring myself to tell that story or be on that platform, and mass produce that message. So I am very strategic for the things I choose to audition for… not just take.”

The panel was jammed pack with good advice for those interested in breaking into the field. For more, check out the The Source’s Facebook Live of the panel.

In an effort to keep his mission of impacting the community alive, Nipsey Hussle’s family has launched the Neighborhood Nip Foundation which will keep programs and include programs and initiatives geared towards bettering the community.

One program, in particular, will help unknown artist break into the music industry. In a statement, Nispey’s brother  Asghedom said, “We used to talk a lot about what the Watts Towers program meant to him. A push, a little help can go a long way, and that’s what this foundation will 100% be about.”The foundation will be aligned with everything Nip believed in and what helped him.”

To show their support Atlantic Records, contributed an unknown six-figure donation to the foundation. In 2017, Nipsey’s label All Money In partnered with Atlantic on a deal which included Victory Lap.

In a statement, Atlantic Records chairman and CEO Craig Kallman and chairman and COO Julie Greenwald said, “Nipsey will be forever missed, but his courageous, generous spirit lives on in his incredible music and the impact he made on the community. Nip’s love for the generation coming up behind him is a big part of what’s inspiring this foundation, and we’re proud to celebrate his life by supporting his legacy.”

100% of the proceeds from Nipsey’s Puma collaboration, which was announced months before his death will also go towards the Neighborhood Nip Foundation. The line will lunch on September 5th.

Dwight Howard is officially heading back to the Lakers.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Howard has reached a buyout agreement with the Memphis Grizzlies and intends to join the Los Angeles Lakers once he becomes a free agent.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Howard’s deal with the Lakers will be non-guaranteed. The team intends to make him prove both his ability to contribute and his improved ability to interact with both players and coaches if he wants to remain a part of the roster.

The 33-year-old spent last season with the Washington Wizards but only played nine games for them after undergoing spinal surgery early in the year. Howard’s last full season came with the Charlotte Hornets, where he averaged 16.6 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.

The room opened up for Howard when DeMarcus Cousins went down with a torn ACL. He’ll provide frontcourt depth for a Laker team that expects to be significantly better in 2019-20.

The Lakers will be Howard’s fifth team since he signed as a free agent in Atlanta in 2016. He has played with the Hawks, Charlotte, and Washington — and been waived after trades to Brooklyn and Memphis without ever wearing a uniform. He played only nine games with Washington before back surgery ended his season.

WWE’s newest power couple, Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch, are ready to tie the knot.

Lynch, the Raw Women’s Champion, took to social media on Thursday night to share an engagement photo with her fans, along with the caption, “Happiest day of my life. For the rest of my life.” The duo went public with their relationship in May ahead of the annual Money In The Bank PPV, and both have experienced tremendous success since then.

According to Page Six, the couple first fueled romance rumors back in April when they were seen sitting together during the WWE Hall of Fame induction event.

The following month, Rollins shared a photo on his Instagram, that seemingly confirmed the dating whispers.

Two months after confirming their relationship, the athletes walked the red carpet together at the 2019 ESPY Awards in July, marking each star’s first time at the annual sports awards show.

Lynch and Rollins are far from the only pair of WWE superstars involved in a romance. As wrestling fans have seen with Charlotte Flair and Andrade, Aleister Black and Zelina Vega, Rusev and Lana, The Miz and Maryse, and others, the WWE has made an effort to keep these couples on the same brand.

Motherless Brooklyn follows Lionel Essrog, portrayed by Edward Norton, a lonely private detective living with Tourette Syndrome, as he ventures to solve the murder of his mentor and only friend, Frank Minna, played by Bruce Willis.

Hasbro the company that owns Furbies, My Little Pony, and more toy franchises is now the owner of Death Row Records.

Rolling Stone reported the toy and board game brand acquired the iconic West Coast record label’s discography with the $4 billion purchase of Entertainment One.

eOne became the parent company of Death Row Records in 2013 when they bought the label’s entire catalog for about $280 million, 7 years after Death Row filed for bankruptcy.

“The acquisition of eOne adds beloved story-led global family brands that deliver strong operating returns to Hasbro’s portfolio and provides a pipeline of new brand creation driven by family-oriented storytelling,” Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner said in a statement.

Aside from the Death Row Records acquisition, Hasbro now owns new popular cartoons like Peppa Pig and PJ Masks.

On this date in 1993, J-Ro, Tash, and E-Swift, the West Coast collective known as Tha Alkaholiks, released their premiere album 21 & Over on Steve Rifkind’s Loud/RCA imprint.

Founded by West Coast legend King Tee, Tha Alkaholiks and their music are recognized as the epitome of Cali party music, with the clinking bottles and drunken burps as the backdrop. The 21 & Over project served as one of the few examples of the West Coast Hip Hop that wasn’t oversaturated with California gang life. Instead, Tha Liks were a part of the Cali movement of MCs who had to prove their lyrical skills were competitive when compared to their East Coast counterparts.

The ten-track classic is less than 40 minutes in length, but the drunken style theme is maintained throughout the entire project, with sure shot singles like “Last Call”, “Make Room” and “Likwit” that solidified Tha Liks as a force from the West that continues to be recognized for their contribution to the game.

Salute to King Tee and the crew for churning out this timeless Hip Hop classic!

The power of collaborations has proven to be an ongoing trend in the world of streetwear. From PUMA’s upcoming Nipsey Hussle collection in tribute to the company’s profoundly missed brand ambassador, to more experimental drops like Forever 21’s capsule with USPS, there are simply no limits to who, what or how a collab can come together. It’s for this reason that a company like Snapple linking up with Chicago creative Joe “Freshgoods” Robinson for a merch drop makes perfect sense.

Setting up shop in the Lower East Side of New York City last night (August 22), Joe launched his “corner store” pop-up with Snapple to debut a special edition bottle design, two T-Shirts and a standout yellow trucker cap. A handful of industry heads and famous faces made their way out in the rain to come show support to the homie, one in particular being fellow Chi-town native and longtime supporter Chance the Rapper. With an entourage that included his brother Taylor Bennett not too far behind, Chano showed much enthusiasm for the set, including other pieces from Joe’s past collabs that will also be available at the pop-up throughout the weekend.

We got a chance (no pun intended!) to speak with Joe in the midst of greeting supporters and fans of his work, and he gave us a quick quote on what exactly goes into his collaborations when it comes down to putting out that fire. Peep what he told The Source exclusively below:

“With this collab, I wanted to tell a story. Right now in particular we’re dealing with a time in the culture, and even this era of life, where the word ‘collab’ is getting kind of diluted. We’re about these brand partnerships where I can align my brand with other brands, but for me it’s all about making sure the story makes sense overall. I never want to be one of those dudes, especially being the Black man that I am, who just gives away his energy. My only thing is making sure it’s a situation where I can hear an idea and spit it back at you how I want to do it instead of you just pitching me a deck. I look for companies that are like, ‘Hey Joe, what do you want to do?’ versus ‘Hey Joe, you’ve got to do it like this.’ That’s always number one for me.”

— Joe Freshgoods

Joe Freshgoods’ pop-up shop, cleverly titled “The Corner Store Was My Gift Shop,” will operate starting today at 198 Allen Street until 8PM, and will also be open to the public tomorrow (12PM – 4PM) and Sunday (12PM – 4PM). The trucker hat will be on sale for $30 USD, meanwhile both shirts retail for $45 USD.

Snoop Dogg stopped by The Breakfast Club on Wednesday and was asked if he agreed with Nipsey Hussle’s statement that he’s this generation Tupac Shakur. Snoop is the perfect person to ask because he was friends with both rappers and he agreed with the late rapper’s statement.

“The spirit Nipsey had was the spirit Tupac had as far as being up close and personal with the people and just… trying to give back,” he explained. “I think Nipsey did what Tupac couldn’t do. I think [Nipsey] was the extension, like running the 440 relay and you pass the baton.”

“I think the spirit of Tupac was Nipsey—the seed that he planted because he don’t rap like him, but he moved like him,” the West Coast OG added. “The way he was lovable but he was gangster at the same time. The way he was about the kids…the community work. That’s the same thing Tupac was about.”

Snoop Dogg also spoke about the song “One Blood, One Cuzz” from his latest collection, I Wanna Thank Me, that he dedicated to Nip.

“It really, really broke my heart. Like for real,” he said of Nipsey’s death. “It was kinda hard to write something with the spirit of how do I celebrate him feeling like I’m feeling. How do I represent him in the light that makes the most sense.”

Uncle Snoop talked highly of Neighborhood Nip and exactly how and why he got that moniker.

“[Nipsey] stood for was stopping the gang violence. He was from 60 Crip but he loved gang members. He loved Bloods. He loved YG,” he said. “And the bond he had with the ‘hood and different neighborhoods was impeccable. He was like a street soldier.”

Dave Chappelle is putting together a block party in support of the victims of the Dayton shooting. The free benefit concert, called Gem City Shine, will be held at the Oregon District at 4 p.m. this Sunday (August 25).

“This event will honor the lives lost and to reclaim the community’s favorite places to shop, dine and enjoy time with family and friends,” a Facebook event page stated.

The comedian famously hosted a 2004 block party which was documented and made into a film, Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. Although he’s a Washington D.C. native, Dave Chappelle spent a lot of time growing up in Yellow Springs, Ohio and he currently resides there.

The location of the block party is where the shooting went down on August 4th. The gunman, Connor Stephen Betts, killed nine people including his sister, and injured more than two dozen before the police fatally shot him.

Shortly after the mass shooting, many public figures like Rihanna spoke out about the tragedy. And now Chappelle is taking action.

For the past week when you scroll down your news feed you saw someone raving about the new chicken sandwich from Popeyes. People are going as far as saying it’s better than Chic-Fil-a.

The launch of the product has ignited a social media war that is still going strong. People are creating memes comparing fast food restaurants and engaging in full-blown physical altercations at different locations.

The official Popeyes Twitter account has noted they haven’t done anything different in their marketing approach but Black Twitter was a huge force in the sandwiches success.

Apex Marketing Group reports the fast food chain pocketed an estimated $23.25 million in equivalent ad value in media mentions for “Popeyes Chicken Sandwich” across digital, print, social, TV, and radio in just 11 days.

The sandwich is sold out in different locations. A Dallas strip club, Aces of Dallas, offered free chicken sandwiches after people paid their way to the club.

The Black spending dollar and influence is so powerful. Imagine if we put this energy into Black-owned businesses.

Did you try the chicken sandwich yet? Do you think it lives up to the hype?

Remy Martin invaded Chicago on Thursday, August 22 for the latest edition of Season Six of Remy producers. Hosted at TAO Chicago, Grammy-award winning producer Zaytoven was the lead judge for the competition, joined by Chicago’s own Young Chop and Season Five winner Milo, who recently produced Big Sean’s “Overtime.”

The evening included a cocktail reception and a competition of producers from the Midwest, which crowned Scylla the victor and moving him on to the national finale in Atlanta to compete for the opportunity to win a producers deal with Jermaine Dupri and So-So Def Records.

The series also features super producers Boi-1da and TrakGirl, all to celebrate excellence and craftsmanship of music production.

The competition in Chicago was hosted by WGCI Morning Host and POWER30 member Kyle Santillian, and also brought out Radio Host Trey White, Stylist Bebe Jones, Celebrity Jeweler Clint da Jeweler, Actors from The Chi Barton Fitzpatrick and Jacob Latimore, and Jonn Richardson of 3 Deep Chicago.

After crowning the Chicago winner, Zaytoven spoke with The SOURCE to discuss his Remy Producers experience and to name his starting five of producers.

The Source: What led you to agree to be apart of the Remy Producer Series?
Zaytoven: I did this series maybe two years ago and I loved it. I get to fly to new talent and encourage them, that’s something I always want to be a part of.

For this producer series event, what do you look for in the selections presented by the contestants?
Always looking for new creativity. Nowadays we have people just mimicking sounds and other producers, so I definitely am looking for new creative ideas.

Does a specific sound work best when you are competing and aiming to win over a crowd and someone like yourself?
Taking like say a trap sound mixed with something Carribean, getting original with it. When I hear something that is mixed with different sounds, a mixture, something that isn’t just one way. That’s what shocks me.

Outside of this series, what can a producer do to attract your attention and see that its someone you want to work with in the future?
Have swag. I hear the music and I look at that but I also check out who they are, how they carry themselves, how they look. That means something these days.

Are there any advantages that you think this generation of rising producers have that you didn’t and was there someone you had over this generation?
The advantages that I had they didn’t are you were forced to learn things the hard way. You were forced to learn music and different equipment. The advantages that they have is social media, different outlets to place their music, the accessibility to artists and you don’t have to get out and do the footwork you would usually have to.

For those that are not named the winner, what would you want them to take away from this experience and some advice for their futures?
I want them to take that losing or winning this battle isn’t everything. You have to go home, find you an artist, work on your craft and build a sound. Your sound is the only way you survive in this game.

You get a call today from an A-list Hip-Hop artist to create an album and you need a Starting Five of producers for it, who are you picking?
Starting Five, I’m going to go with Zaytoven, DJ Quik, Mannie Fresh, oh you making it hard.

You can have a sixth man too.
We going to go with them, then I have to say, Dr. Dre, Kanye West. And for the wildcard, we going to throw Timbo [Timbaland] in there.

A$AP Rocky’s Sweden nightmare is finally over but President Donald Trump’s allies would’ve like the Harlem rapper to show more gratitude for his intervention.

Yahoo News reports that Darrell Scott, an Ohio pastor, and Kareem Lanier, who runs Scott’s non-profit organization, claims Rocky didn’t thank them or the White House for trying to get involved in the case.

Scott and Lanier reportedly facilitated the President’s involvement with his lawyer, Damien Granderson, and manager, John Ehmann, with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s nod. They allegedly had a verbal agreement that Rocky would thank the White House for assistance.

However, the Swedish government confirmed that not even the President of the United States himself can influence the outcome of the case, which Flacko was ultimately found guilty for.

“I was like, man, you ungrateful muthafuckas, you. I can’t believe you. … We didn’t ask you guys for nothing other than for you guys to be grateful,” Lanier said he told him. “We just want you guys to be appreciative and say thank you.”

After A$AP Rocky’s release on August 2nd and guilty verdict, he thanked his fans and everyone who supported him on social media, but he didn’t specifically name Trump. He’s presumably big mad after his tweets made rounds on social media and this would’ve been a good PR stunt for his upcoming Presidential campaign.

“All he had to do was do a two-minute call to say thank you,” said Scott. “Rocky hasn’t even called us and said, ‘Hey, man, thank you guys. I appreciate it,’ in private. Just in private.”

Should Rocky have said thank you or should the people who intervened not be so pressed about credit and be happy that they did right by a fellow American?

Madame Tussauds welcomed the ‘Iconic Burger’ – Zinger at its location in Regal building in Connaught Place, New Delhi, India.

The Zinger is easily the most historic and “drool-worthy” addition at Madame Tussauds Delhi. Just like a truly public figure, the Zinger has real fans and made headlines, even on The Source Magazine!

Moksh Chopra, Chief Marketing Officer, KFC India explains how the burger made its way to the wax museum: “While many have wondered if the Zinger is a piece of art or a celeb; all debates are now put to rest with the Zinger asserting its celeb status at Madame Tussauds. Surely this isn’t any regular burger. It is the only burger that has travelled to space and has even inspired tattoo artworks for some. In 2018 alone we sold more than 10 million Zingers in India – that’s like a Zinger each for every person in New Zealand and Singapore!”

Anshul Jain, General Manager, and Director, Merlin Entertainments India Pvt. Ltd, adds, “Madame Tussauds Delhi is one of the most favored and loved family entertainment destination in Delhi NCR. Our endeavor has always been to give a complete and memorable experience to all our visitors. We welcome the Zinger Burger to Madame Tussauds Delhi”

Just as the actual Zinger burger is hand made with care at the KFC restaurant, the Zinger at Madame Tussauds Delhi was crafted with similar precision. Madame Tussauds is globally known for their lifelike figures of famous personalities; each figure being created using precise measurements & photographs by skilled artists and sculptors to capture exact details.

Visitors can feast their eyes upon the Zinger burger at Madame Tussauds in Delhi from 21st August.

Rapsody has returned with her new album Eve, which salutes historic African-American women in history. The album brings J. Cole, Queen Latifah, J.I.D., GZA, D’Angelo and more to the effort.

The album features “NINA,” which is the first self-directed video for Rapsody.

“One of my favorite quotes from Nina Simone is, ‘An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times.’ That’s where I wanted to start. …That song [‘Strange Fruit,’ which the track samples], and particularly Nina Simone, says a lot about who I am, why I make the music that I make and what I want my legacy to be. That’s why I started there,” Rapsody said to NPR.

“NINA” follows the album’s first music video “IBTIHAJ,” which was directed by Jay Scorsese and co-directed by Misa Hylton and features appearances from GZA, Mary J. Blige, and Roxanne Shanté, while paying homage to Ibtihaj Muhammad. Mohammad is a member of the United States national fencing team, and also is the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while competing for the US in the Olympics in 2016.

In addition to Muhammed and Simone, Rapsody paid tribute to Serena Williams, Michelle Obama, Ibtihaj Muhammad and Sojourner Truth and more.

You will also be able to catch Rapsody on tour this fall when she joints Big K.R.I.T. on his From the South With Love Tour. You can check out the full dates for the show below.
