Whatsup all, I haven’t been around for a minute so let me begin by wishing you all a happy and healthy new year. I am sure some of you have read Amber Rose’s most recent words about little miss Kimmy Kardashian “home-wrecking” her and Kanye’s relationship. Well in honor of this, we at The Source are going to breakdown what we think are the Messiest Breakups in Hip-Hop. Peep the list below!
Bobby Brown & Whitney Houston – After meeting at the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards Bobby and Whitney dated for three years before tying the knot in 1992. Things seemed to be working great for the R&B couple until Whitney filed for separation and divorce in 2006 due to spousal and drug abuse.
Ike & Tina Turner – Ike and Tina at one point were the hottest and most explosive and dynamic R&B group rivaled in their time only by James Brown. Eventually Ike and Tina began dating which led to an illegal marriage due to Ike never divorcing his first wife. Throughout the marriage, Ike had many offstage problems with drugs and abused Tina and their children both physically and mentally. In 1975, Tina left Ike after he unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide.
Chris Brown & Rihanna – Sometime in 2008, Chris and RiRi appeared several times in public together and began dating. This became one of the hottest young celebrity relationships despite only lasting a short amount of time. After one year of dating, Chris and Rihanna were involved in a bout of domestic violence that will haunt the two forever. Chris was arrested for assaulting Rihanna and thanks to leaked photos of Rihanna by TMZ, the public got to see for themselves the how bad the assault really was. With public interviews by Jay-Z and Kanye West stating their disgust with Chris and support for their “little sister” Rihanna, it’s hard to believe Chris will ever live this down.
The Dream & Christina Millian – As we all know, Dream and Christina got married in 2009 and had a rocky relationship. This was underscored however when photos leaked of The Dream and his personal assistant Melissa Santiago having an affair in the Caribbean. The Dream and Christina had a daughter together and ended their marriage after less than a year.
Nelly & Ashanti – Nelly and Ashanti began dating shortly after they met at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. They dated until about 2009 when Ashanti found out Nelly was cheating. Both artists have been very private about what actually went down with this breakup, but its safe to assume that the breakup hurt their music careers, as both have been pretty much off the radar since.
Jermaine Dupri & Janet Jackson – Dupri and Jackson met in 2002 and began dating shortly afterwards. They were together for about seven years. After less than a month after the death of her brother Michael Jackson, the couple split. It is believed that they couple split amicably, however just a few months before they ended JD got a tattoo of the Virgin Mary with Janet’s face along his side… Lets hope that since he’s gotten that touched up.
Diddy & Jennifer Lopez – In 1999 Diddy and J-Lo began their two-year relationship. The relationship was one of the most publicized of the time and reportedly was ended by J-Lo due to the negative publicity that the pair received following the Club New York shooting that Diddy and Shyne were involved in in 2001. Diddy has never been married since and still says he loves J-Lo, and as for J-Lo… we all know where she’s at now (sorry Marc).
Usher & Chilli – This breakup may have been one of the best things to ever happen to the singer. Chilli ended the relationship after she found out that Usher cheated on her, and Usher went on to create a tell-all album called Confessions. You guys remember that album right? It went diamond and is one of the greatest R&B albums ever.
Nas & Kelis – The two artists began dating in 2003 and dated for two years before they were married. At the time they were the hip-hop power couple (obviously occurring before the Jay-Beyoncé era). The two had a super messy breakup and Kelis filed for divorce in 2009 while pregnant with their first child. The end result of this divorce was a huge mess with the two still in court battling over spousal and child support.
Eminem & Kim Mathers – Eminem and Kim first married in 1999, however in 2001 they divorced. Afterwards, Slim wrote a song about brutally killing her called ‘Kim’. For some crazy reason beyond me, they remarried in 2006, only to divorce again a few months later. The lone bright spot in this relationship is the couple’s children who despite Em’s hatred for Kim, still have his heart. Although I don’t agree with his ways, this rocky relationship led to some awesome music.
Kanye West & Amber Rose – As we all know, Amber was Kanye’s muse during his infamous Taylor Swift incident and stood by his side as he fleed the country to escape the bad press that faced him. She served as inspiration for Kanye’s fifth studio album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and things seemed great until we learned of their breakup. As we have learned today, Kim Kardashian seemed to be the dagger into the relationship as it is claimed by Amber that Kim sent Kanye naked pictures. Could Kim be the recipient of the pictures Kanye sent out as told in his song “Runaway”? Since, Amber has moved on to the real love of her life, Wiz Khalifa and Kanye is currently watching over the throne.
