Today marks 10 years since the death of rapper, singer, dancer and songwriter, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, founding member of the multi-platinum girl-group TLC. She lost her life in a 2002 car accident during a trip to Honduras, where she had went to film a documentary about her spiritual journey.
Lopes was the ‘Crazy’ in TLC’s “Crazy, Sexy, Cool”, and lived up to that title every moment of her career. From her energetic rap style to her crazy outfits and sometimes over the top personality (both on and off the stage), she was one of the first female emcees fully embraced by the mainstream, and one of hip-hop’s most promising stars.
According to billboard.com
“The multi-platinum group was behind such Hot 100 No. 1 hits as “No Scrubs,” “Waterfalls” and “Unpretty.” The act’s 1999 album “FanMail” debuted on top of the Billboard 200 and Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. TLC sold 15.6 million albums in the U.S. and is the second-biggest selling female R&B group of the past 20 years, according to Nielsen SoundScan. There’s no doubt that TLC revamped the girl group in the ’90s and paved way for other acts like Destiny’s Child.”
On the Solo front Left Eye released one album overseas entitled Supernova in the summer of 2001, and the album was repackaged and released in 2009 as Eye Legacy, a tribute/remix album. Check out some of her best moments below, and share some of your favorite Left Eye memories.
