DJ Scream has been pushing his name and vision through mixtapes and radio sessions. Now aligned with Maybach Music Group, already having success with his Rich Forever mixtape with Rick Ross, Scream talks his past, present and future.
Explain how you got your start in radio?
I been doing radio since college. Back in Atlanta, Georgia Tech and Georgia University would bring me in as a mix DJ. Before XM and Sirius merged, XM got wind of my mixes and ended up giving me an hour show. After the merger they gave me Wednesday nights 10 pm on Sirius Hip Hop Nation. That was back in 2008, now we just celebrated our four year anniversary. We also landed a show locally on Hot 107.9 Hoodrich Radio thats Sunday nights at 8 pm.
I like to think of my show as a live mixtape. We play the latest and dopest tracks, we cover Hip-Hop news and give our unbiased opinion on things.
How did the alignment with you and Ross and Maybach Music Group happen?
After I was breaking Shawty Lo records on the airwaves and through mixtapes, he would randomly hit me up like, “Yo what up I see you.” He hit me up like a year ago, he had just finished the first leg of the I AM Music Tour. He flew me down the next day to speak. He was straight to the point in our 6 hour conversation. We immediately started talking about ways to move the music with the whole conglomerate, Ross, Meek, Wale, Stalley and everyone else.
Lets talk about the Rich Forever mixtape you were behind.
That idea for the tape came from our first meeting, at least the vision for it. He was overseas touring off a mixtape, so its crazy. He’s heading back overseas and he just locked in that Reebok deal. So the mixtape was good for everyone including myself.
What else do you have dropping soon?
You know I’m on my tech stuff so I got this new iPhone App and at the end of the month I got the Android version dropping. Its basically an interactive look into DJ Scream. Covers all my interviews, my mixtapes and what not.
I also have just closed in on an album title Long Live The Hustle, it’s going to be an album about going out there and getting it. Hoping to put it out before the end of 2012 or whenever its ready and completed. I will be dropping under the Maybach Music Warner Music imprint. There is a lot of people out there not doing what they got to do, so the music I’ve been making and projecting is inspiring and solid. As far as the project is concerned it will be compilation base.
If there was a Hip-Hop fantasy draft, who is your picks?
Got to go with the hustlers and the establishers. Rick Ross would be the first pick after that I would have to go with Wayne or Kanye. Look at what the MMG’s, the YMCMB’s, the G.O.O.D. Music’s have done. Not to discredit the other movements around but we haven’t seen this since the Death Row and the No Limit eras.
