The Brooklyn Nets have been working feverishly to get Deron Williams to re-sign with the team. They made a major move by acquiring Joe Johnson from the Atlanta Hawks. The Nets will send the expiring contracts of Jordan Farmar, Johan Petro, Anthony Morrow and Jordan Williams along with DeShawn Stevenson (via sign-and-trade) and a future first-round pick (lottery-protected in 2013 via Houston) to Atlanta in exchange for Johnson. The deal cannot be completed until July 11th when DeShawn Stevenson is allowed to sign as a free agent.
Joe Johnson is owed nearly $90 million over the next four seasons. Though the Hawks didn’t get much in talent they’ve significantly improved their cap room. The Nets are hoping the acquisition of Johnson is enough to convince Deron Williams to stay but they’re not done yet. Today it was announced that there’s a proposed deal in place to also send Dwight Howard to the Nets, his preferred destination. The proposed trade includes sending Howard to the Nets and sending Brook Lopez, Marshon Brooks, Kris Humphries and the Nets first-round picks in 2013, 2015, and 2017 to Orlando. The Magic reportedly isn’t enthusiastic about this deal and would rather wait it out while weighing their other options. The Houston Rockets are also in talks with the Magic and could likely propose a better trade. They are also willing to practically rent Howard for year since it’s unlikely that he will resign with the team. The ball is currently in the Magic’s court since Dwight waived his opt-out option. His indecisive nature is causing his own demise. Deron Williams is set to make a decision very soon between the Nets and Mavericks. Dwight Howard still has some hope.
