Being a hip hop fan as well as a movie buff really allows me to experience the best of both worlds. Since joining The Source I’ve gradually positioned myself to cover entertainment and making the connection between hip hop and film for the readers. Starting a new weekly column I will be catching up with artists and finding out what movies really appealed to them and the criteria they look for when deciding what makes the cut whether it is the characters, memorable scenes, or the plot.

This week we got to catch up with Joell Ortiz and asked him what five movies really stuck out to him over time. The list probably won’t be what you would expect but that’s what makes this concept fresh and interesting. Check below to see what Ortiz had to say on his Top 5.

1. “The Goonies” – Joell takes it back to the childhood classics and reflects on the nostalgia rooted in “The Goonies.” “As a kid, that adventurous, get lost and look for treasure sh*t was just cool.”

2. “Love & Basketball” – Keeping it pretty simple with his reasoning Ortiz offers up “Love & Basketball” as another favorite with “I love Sanaa Lathan,” but who could disagree with that.

3. “Arlington Road” – “I try to get everybody to watch that.” The drama focused on terrorism is a favorite of Joell and one that he likes to share with others and it works because I personally will be checking it out.

4. “Tupac: Resurrection” – Joell is a big supporter of 2 Pac and his music and felt that the documentary made him like him as more than an artist. “It really captured his personality. I never met him, and I already love his music, but this made me like him as a person.”

5. “Wizard of Oz” – Rounding out his Top 5, Joell Ortiz resorts to another timeless project. “Super classic.”

There you have it, what do you all think about Joell Ortiz Top 5?
