LUV, a film directed by Sheldon Candis, is a story about a boy’s relationship with his uncle and the trials and tribulations of growing up. Woody, played by Michael Rainey Jr., spends a day that he will never forget with with his uncle Vincent played by Common. Vincent, an ex-convict looking for a fresh start, takes his nephew Woody for the day to teach him “how to be a man”. Vincent was recently released from prison and is looking for a new life. Vincent has big plans to start his own restaurant, win back the love of his life played by Meagan Good, and rescue his sister (Woody’s mom). As Vincent begins his journey you can see there’s hope and promise, but you soon find out old habits die hard.

This debut film by Sheldon Davis, scores a touchdown with a dream cast. From Common to Meagan Good, everyone delivers in a big way. The cinematography of the film itself was beautiful. The way in which it was shot and the lighting was breathtaking. This is Common’s breakout role and there is great depth to his performance. Davis captures Common’s rawness and Rainey’s childlike perpective well, but at times the storyline becomes too far-fetched. LUV is a story that hasn’t been told yet in cinema and is a film worth seeing.
