Draped in a gray trench coat, black slacks and a Gucci bag just minutes before her hearing, Lauryn Hill appeared in court today in Newark prepared to be given her sentence for tax fraud to which she plead guilty last year. Instead, U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo gave the Grammy Award winning artist a break, giving her until May 6th to pay the half million in back taxes owed.

If Lauryn does not pay the back taxes within the alotted time, she faces a minimum of 24 months and a maximum of 30 months in federal prison. Needless to say, her lawyer Nathan Beckman vows that the Fugees femme fatale will pay her tab.
