Psy’s new song “Gentlement” is causing quite a stir on the net.

The 2013 Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards honored our 2012 International Artist of the year Psy at the NYU Stern School of Business on April 26. With the first YouTube video to reach 1 billion views, South Korean pop artist Psy has become an ambassador for his country and a leading crossover artist, launching K-pop onto the international stage. His hit song “Gangnam Style” is more than a catchy tune and dance sequence, it is a cultural phenomenon. Psy said that receiving the award at NYU Stern was special, since he had applied to the school and was rejected, so it was a full circle moment for him.

Q: What does it mean for you to be so successful in America?

Well, every time I’m doing some promo and singing or interviewing in this country, honestly, that makes me nervous because my English is only four years old, every time you ask me a question I got to translate it and then I got to answer it and it’s getting faster, but still it’s really a headache, but I like it.

Q: Do you have any plans to do a song in English?

No, but still this song does not have that much English. And besides the English doesn’t make any sense – mother, father, gentleman — what is that? When I was in the U.S. as a college kid, I spent only four years but I never expected I could use that English as this kind of function, so thank God I can speak English.

Q: How did youtube change your life?

So I basically was working with a company called YG in Korea and they’re also with the boy band called Big Bang and the girl band called 2ne1, and they both have a lot of fans worldwide. The reason why the company is using YouTube is because of the both of them, not me. So I was only for Korea. And they just uploaded a video so I asked them, “Hey, you don’t have to do that!” But they said, you know, “It’s just a common thing, so don’t worry about it.” So I did it, but it pops up like this so what can I say? Sh*t happens, you know.
