Basketball movies have been around since the late 70s and we’ve seen just about every story imaginable when it comes to the realm of basketball plots. “Above the Rim” is without a doubt a classic for both the hip hop and basketball communities. Boasting an all-star cast including the likes of Duane Martin, Marlon Wayans, Bernie Mac, and the prolific 2Pac, “Above the Rim” keeps it raw with the gritty and tough inner city basketball lifestyle. The film follows Kyle (Martin) who waits for his scholarship acceptance to Georgetown University but is faced with the decision to play for his coach or get into a street basketball tournament associated with Birdie (2Pac), a well-known thug in the local community. Accompanied with an ill soundtrack with contributions from Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Nate Dogg, and Warren G, “Above the Rim”´ is a street classic and most definitely Throwback material.
