Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels is one of hip-hop’s living legends who’s inspirational music reached the ears and hearts of millions. Darryl held a press-conference at Midtown Comics announcing the foundation, goals, and inspiration behind putting forth a new comic that will focus on the b-boys, graffiti artists, and hip-hop culture mixed with storyline, hero vs. villian, and other comic book-esque themes.

The first book published will be the 48 page graphic novel under the imprint Darryl Makes Comics, [DMC, meant to be right?]

Darryl will be the publisher behind the novel along with Editor-in-Chief, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez and Riggs Morales as the Senior Editor. The graphic novel will feature some of the comic industry’s finest including artist Damion Scott (Batman, Batgirl, Robin, Solo and Spiderman), ink-work by Dexter Vines (Superman, Batman, Civil War and Wolverine), and writer Ronald Wimberly (Prince of Cats).

The main character will be Darryl, a superhero fighting justice in an alternate universe. Darryl spoke during the press-conference in regards to how “RunDMC” may take away light on the comic himself, stating “I’m just the bait.” But Darryl emphasized that the focus of the comic will celebrate the artist and writer just like hip-hop celebrate the MC or the DJ, a courtesy that has faded since. Darryl’s determination to make this comic stems from his own love for comics. Making this comic is Darryl’s way of giving back to the comic culture that inspired his lyrics, style, and way of thought.

Rodriguez summed up the graphic novel’s intention comparing it to the way hip-hop used to be: “We’re putting it into the fans hands, just like hip-hop pushed CDs out of trunks. There’s no corporate backing behind the comic, we’re looking for the fans to [enjoy the comic and] push this for us.”
