Hip-Hop and Reggae has had a long  interwoven relationship.

Some might even say Reggae plays an influential role in of Hip-Hop. Whatever the case may be, the sampling of Reggae has occurred for decades beginning most notably with Boogie Down Production’s who has sampled the great works of Yellowman, Super Cat, and many other Reggae legends.

Fast forward to now, and the Reggae infused Hip-Hop releases are in abundance ranging from tracks on Yeezus (which ironically uses Reggae features rather than samples) to French Montana’s “Freaks” ft. Trinidadian bred Nicki Minaj with her smash hits.

Freaks – Nicki Minaj ft French Montana

There was nothing creative nor innovative with the sample usage of Chaka Demus and Pliers “Murder She Wrote” on French Montana’s “Freaks.” The sample used is simply the song chopped and noticably looped around with little to no alteration. Nonetheless, this recently released track featuring French Montana has been a radio hit…. “Haaannnn!”
