Broken Home is Mic Kurb was his second full length. It is tagged as acoustic rap. Besides for being utterly confused as to what that exactly meant, I spent the entire time listening to hear a guitar. Eventually, I gave up, feeling like my dream was futile. While I enjoyed his rapid fire delivery and the energy that he exuded on every track, energy that his compatriots don’t often display in their music, I didn’t see anything that warranted this strange classification.

Then, I heard Classroom Rules, and my jaw promptly hit the floor. On this entire mixtape, Mic Kurb rhymes over only one guitar. I know this is a hip hop site, and I felt like what I imagine most readers are thinking to themselves right now—why the h*ll would I listen to some hippie guitar ish. Don’t overlook this project; it is incredibly daring and creative. Escaping the entire trap/EDM soundscape of hip hop today, choosing to go minimal in his production is a good thing. It’s a different sound, one I had to get use to. Kurb’s flow slows down to give the guitar some space to be heard and progress.

If he is going to be doing things like this in the future, I will continue to listen to his music. This out of the box style while definitely odd at first, shows some creative forethought.
