Possibly the most recognizable member of Two-9, Curtis Williams has been catching a lot of attention recently. Williams was a founder of the group, and has taken the responsibility as the leader. He just dropped his highly anticipated Half Forgotten Day Dream project last month, which included production from Childish Major and features from the likes of Vic Mensa and Robb Bank$. While it was more subdued than his previous work—Trill Sh*t Only—it still included his signature mix of trill, faded braggadocio. It was a standout tape from the summer for sure.
Curtis Williams’ style is a conglomeration of a lot of influences. While Atlanta can clearly be heard in his music—especially when Childish Major sits behind the boards—that is only one small contributing factor of his sound. There are definitely influences from Houston and New Orleans, as well as, some lessons learned from East Coast boom bap, especially in the lyrics. It is an interesting blend, that Williams still working on. A song like “1000 More Blunts” best exemplifies this style. The track seems to move at the slowest pace, mimicking the feel of a purple laced DJ Screw tape and what the result of smoking like 20 blunts, while there are rolling hats that are reminiscent of trap music. The entire track just sound really faded, even when his voice isn’t chopped and screwed.
Williams lyrics are on point and he has a very good ear for beats, which might be due to his producer title he wears once and a while. He is a multi-talented artist who knows how to move people, even when the move is sitting in your couch super baked dreaming of baked potatoes. His love for everything trill has led him well so far, I’m sure it will continue to.
