image-1G-Dep,
also known as Trevell Coleman,  seemed to be living the dream. He had a six figure recording contract with one of the most successful members of the industry, Sean Combs. Critics praised his gangsta rhymes and lifestyle, and he was beloved by many in the rapping community. Unfortunately, behind the music and hood exterior was a trouble soul, trying to cope with the unfortunate actions of his youth.

In 2010, the 37 year old rapper, tired of the burden of guilt, turned himself into the cops. He confessed for a murder that took place over 16 years before–during a robbery that went terribly awry. He seemingly got away with the crime and choose to focus all of his energy into his music, but his conscious got the best of him.

When he originally went to police, they didn’t believe him. Instead, they told him that it happened a long time ago. Still not feeling the weight of his misdeeds, G-Dep went back to the station and confessed once again. This time the cops charged him, and he went on trial for second degree murder. The jury found him guilty and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison on May 8th, 2012. He was 38 years old at the time.

His decision was supported by his prior boss. “G. Dep is one of the nicest artists I ever worked with. … You could always feel like … something was troubling his soul, because he was real quiet,” Combs said at the time. “But he’s the type of guy who wouldn’t hurt a fly. … He did the right thing and manned up to it. But my prayers go out to him. He had a real bad drug problem and that could have caused that situation.”

“I don’t feel like I’m cheating life too much anymore,” Coleman said in an interview with ABC News’ Nightline. “A lot of the burden is lifted, you know what I mean? And that was what I needed to do.”

While it is unfortunate that he will spend a significant amount of time behind bars, his actions are honorable. Hopefully, he can find peace.
