When The Roots decided to make longtime co-front man Black Thought the centerpiece of their criminally slept-on 2004 album, The Tipping Point, the veteran emcee took it upon himself to display his creativity in ways he hadn’t before. The most shining example of that is “Boom!” a record in which he invokes the style and sound of not one legendary emcee, but two. After a first verse all-his-own, Riq Gees transforms into Big Daddy Kane on the second, delivering original bars with an eerie similarity to the Brooklyn emcee; as if that wasn’t impressive enough, Thought morphs once again on the third verse, this time under the guise of Kool G. Rap, to deliver an impressive homage to two rappers who surely influenced Thought’s pen.
